Cropsey, the eldest of eight children, was born in Rossville, Staten Island, New York, on his father Jacob Rezeau Cropsey's farm. Cropsey experienced bouts of ill health as a young lad. Cropsey learned how to sketch on his own while he was not in class. He drew landscapes and architectural sketches in the margins of his schoolbooks and on notepads throughout his early years.
Early in the 1840s, Cropsey studied architecture under Joseph Trench. During this time, he also received instruction from Edward Maury in watercolor painting and enrolled in some life drawing classes at the National Academy of Design. He opened his own architectural practice in 1843, but it wasn't until 1844 that he started showing his watercolors at the National Academy of Design. After being elected an associate member a year later, he focused solely on painting landscapes, and soon after, he was included in the "Italian Compositions" exhibition.
Cropsey visited England, France, Switzerland, and Italy on his 1847–1849 European tour. In 1851, he was elected as a full member of the Academy. Henry Tappan, who presided over the University of Michigan from 1852 until 1863, was a close friend of Cropsey. In 1855, he visited Ann Arbor at Tappan's invitation and created two paintings: a college scene and a painting of the Detroit Observatory. In 1856, he traveled overseas once more and lived in London for seven years, sending his photographs to the Royal Academy and the 1862 International Exhibition.
After returning home, he established a studio in New York and focused on painting the fall landscapes of the northeastern United States, which were frequently romanticized and characterized by vibrant hues. In 1866, Cropsey and 10 other artists founded the American Society of Painters in Water Colors. Cropsey also created the architectural plans for New York's elevated train stations.

Jasper Francis Cropsey
Born on Staten Island, New York, Jasper Cropsey became a nationally known luminist landscape painter whose work reflects his interest in architecture and allegorical progression, seasons, etc. Called "America's painter of autumn", he was especially known for his sunlit-ridden fall landscapes. Reportedly the peak of his career was the creation of a "nine-foot-long canvas of a New York autumn. Its brilliant colors stunned many of the English viewers to whom it was presented in London." (Zellman 202) His painting, Autumn on the Hudson River, was so well received in England that Queen Victoria granted him an audience. Cropsey had early success, being acclaimed by the press when he was in his twenties. He was trained in architecture, having been apprenticed to an architect when he was age 15, but he turned to landscape painting, which was then gaining acceptance. He was an admirer of landscape painter Thomas Cole and used Cole's Roman studio when studying in Italy from 1847-49. Although Cole was deceased by then, Cropsey adopted Cole's colorful palette and romantic treatment of subject matter. He lived most of his life at Hastings-on-Hudson, overlooking the Hudson River and traveled and painted extensively in the river valley. However, from 1856 to 1863, he lived in England where the influence of Frederic E. Church replaced Cole. Source: Michael David Zellman, 300 Years of American Art

The career of George Smillie (1840-1921) followed the arc of nineteenth-century U.S. landscape painting. Trained in the Hudson River School tradition, Smillie successfully adapted to changing U.S. tastes and growing interest in European trends. In the late 1800s, he moved to tonalist paintings full of brushwork and influenced by French Barbizon painting. By the end of his career, he had lightened his palette to produce works similar to those of the U.S. impressionists. Yet in all styles, he was never less than competent, and his tonalist work is among the best produced in the United States.
Like many nineteenth-century painters, George Smillie’s artistic training began with the study of printing. His father, James Smillie...

Autumn Landscape
By William Louis Sonntag Sr. 1
Located in Milford, NH
A wonderful Autumn landscape likely of the Hudson River Valley by the revered American artist William Louis Sonntag (1822-1900). Sonntag was born near Pittsburgh, PA and moved to Cincinnati, OH in the 1840’s to study art. He studied for a brief time with G. Frankenstein at the Cincinnati Academy of Fine Art and his idealized paintings of American wilderness and visionary paintings of imagined European ruins were commercially successful. He traveled twice to Europe in the 1850’s to improve his skills, eventually settling in New York City. He joined the National Academy of Design, where he exhibited his works for forty years. His mature works identify him with the Hudson River School of landscape painters. A romantic and naturalistic painter of his surroundings, Sonntag also created idealized paintings of Roman ruins, recalling his European trips of earlier years.
Sonntag was an Associate (1860) and Academician (1861) at the National Academy of Design, and a member of the American Watercolor Society, Artists Fund Society, and the American Art Union...
