About the Item

Title: Stone House in Salardú Artist: Joan Vila‑Puig (1890–1963) Technique: Oil on canvas board Dimensions: 33 x 41 cm (12.99 x 16.14 in) Support: Canvas board Signature: Signed in the lower left corner Inscription on the reverse: "Vila‑Puig – Salardú – Vall d’Aran" Condition: Excellent Provenance: Private collection Frame: Unframed DESCRIPTION The painting depicts a stone building by the edge of a small stream, nestled in a lush, mountainous landscape evocative of the Pyrenees in the province of Lleida. The scene is set in Salardú, a village in the Vall d’Aran, whose traditional architecture is captured with notable fidelity and emotion. Joan Vila‑Puig achieves a balanced composition with loose, confident, and textured brushwork, capturing the vibrant atmosphere of the landscape without falling into excessive detail. The color palette, dominated by greens, ochres, and soft greys, conveys the freshness of the vegetation and the gentle murmur of water flowing over stones. The artist's impressionist style is evident in both the treatment of light and the spontaneity of form, all while maintaining structural rigor. The interplay of light and shadow, together with the dynamic brushstrokes, gives the painting a serene and evocative vitality. ABOUT THE ARTIST Joan Vila‑Puig was born in Sant Quirze del Vallès (Barcelona) in 1890 and died in Bellaterra in 1963. He was one of the most prominent Catalan landscape painters of the 20th century. He studied at the Escola de la Llotja in Barcelona and later at the Reial Acadèmia de Sant Ferran in Madrid. His style evolved from realism influenced by Corot and Millet to a more atmospheric and expressive approach, akin to Joaquim Mir and Rusiñol, though he never veered into decorative fantasy. Vila‑Puig was a chronicler of the rural Catalan landscape, with a special affection for Vallès Occidental, Bages, and the Pyrenees. His work received wide recognition during his lifetime, and his legacy has been institutionalized in his hometown through the Vila‑Puig Cultural Centre, which houses a permanent exhibition of his works. RELATED ARTISTS Although Joan Vila‑Puig developed a distinctive style, his work resonates with several renowned painters: Joaquim Mir – For his vibrant color use and emotional view of the Catalan landscape. Santiago Rusiñol – For his sensitivity to vernacular architecture and gardens. Modest Urgell – Vila‑Puig's mentor, known for his sober landscapes. Martí Alsina – For his early academicism and interest in faithful environmental representation. Carlos de Haes – For his connection to the realist landscape tradition in Spain.
