About the Item

A most attractive painting with an extensive view towards a church tower, just as a rain shower is approaching. The picture includes a charming little figure group of a mother holding her child with their dog at the water's edge. John Berney Ladbooke (1803-1879) Figures by the water's edge with a church tower beyond Oil on panel 14½ x 12 inches without the frame 20 x 17½ icnhes with the frame Provenance: Christie's March 15th 1963, lot 116 (catalogue page attached to the reverse) John Berney Ladbrooke was the son of Robert Ladbrooke (1769-1842), a leading member of the Norwich School of artists, and co-founder of the Norwich Society of Artists. He studied under his uncle by marriage, John Crome (1768-1821) and also with John Thirtle (1777-1839). John Berney Ladbrooke was himself a successful teacher, most notably to John Middleton (1828-1856). His oil paintings are characterised by an intricate attention to detail and the dramatic potential of light in a landscape.
