About the Item
This superb very large British Victorian landscape oil painting is by much sought after landscape artist John Brandon Smith. Painted circa 1870 the composition is a rocky Scottish Highland river landscape painted from the perspective of the middle of the river and one of his favourite subjects to paint. In the foreground is a fisherman with his wife watching him from the near by lane. In the middle ground a somewhat precarious bridge crosses the river and beyond that the Scottish countryside spreads out to mountains in the distance, all beneath a lovely summer's sky. The details in the rocks and gushing water are superb. This is a first rate example of John Brandon Smith's landscape paintings and a lovely 19th century oil painting.

Provenance. Christie's, 4th December 1931, lot 112.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 54 inches by 29 inches and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in an ornate frame, 61 inches by 36 inches and in good condition.
John Brandon Smith exhibited his work regularly at the Royal Academy in London from 1860 until 1874. His favourite subjects were waterscapes, landscapes of Scottish and Welsh rivers and especially waterfalls and mountain lakes, sometimes including the figure of a local inhabitant on a bridge, or a fisherman beside a stream. He also painted views of various English counties. His themes are characteristic of the great Romantic trend in Europe.

John Brandon Smith
John Brandon Smith was a successful mid-19th century landscape painter who became renowned for his river scenes of North Wales, and who excelled in the depiction of waterfalls. Between 1859 and 1884 John Brandon Smith exhibited 22 paintings at the Royal Academy, 41 at the Royal Society of British Artists, and 16 at the British Institution in London.
