About the Item

This vivid mid-20th-century landscape by professional British artist John Edwards (1914–2009) captures a stunning Cornish view with a rushing river beneath an old stone bridge. Painted in 1956, the scene unfolds across a picturesque rolling countryside under airy clouds, as rays of light break through and illuminate the valley and hills. At the right, a towered church appearing as a distant castle anchors the skyline, while a road by the river leads toward the woods where of a gentleman and a two ladies stroll unhurriedly. This artwork evokes the spirit of the 1950s when Cornwall was a favorite destination for British holidaymakers enjoying sunbathing, swimming, and exploring coastal towns and rural attractions. A vintage oil painting on art board, it is inscribed on the reverse: "Pathfinder Village Exeter Cornish Scene Cornwall 1956" and carries the stamp of "The Daler Board Co., Wareham Dorset, Superior Canvas Board". Edwards's confident Post-Impressionist style brings lively brushwork, natural color and movement to water, cloud and stone. This bright British landscape will make a wonderful acquisition for collectors and decorators; it is ready to hang and worthy of gracing any interior, bringing plenty of warm color and light. Size app.: 48 x 58 cm (roughly 18.9 x 22.8 in), frame 54 x 64 cm (roughly 21.3 x 25.2 in). Overall in very good ready to hang condition without damages with minimal wear such craquelure. Please study good resolution images for cosmetic condition. In person actual painting may appear darker or brighter than in our pictures, strictly depending on sufficient light in your environment. Weight of app. 2.1 kg is going to measure 3-4 kg packed for shipment. John Edwards was born in Truro. Little is known of his early life. He was described in 1963 as a company director, and it is believed he was a self-taught artist. In 1956 he married Stella Mary (nee Harding). They were both active artists who became members of STISA (Stella, who used the name Yram ALLETS, in 1959, and John in 1960). Sometime in the 1970s the couple moved from Pathfinder Village in Devon to St Ives, Cornwall. In 1996 they worked from 'Edwards Studio' which was situated in the High Street, St Ives. Both John and Stella Edwards are listed in the 2004-2005 Electoral Register as residing in Carbis Bay. John Edwards died in St Ives in 2009.

Fording the River Landscape British Master Nasmyth 19th century Oil Painting
Located in Stockholm, SE
Signed lower right "Nasmyth" leading to one of the whole pleiad of renowned Scottish artists starting with Alexander Nasmyth (1758 -1840). This painting showcases a scene of a landscape with shallow water, where a family is seen wading through a river ford in knee-deep water. The presence of a shepherdess on a high bank, observing the travelers with keen interest, adds a sense of pastoral charm to the composition. One of the focal points of the painting is a picturesque tree that has fallen into the river, adding a touch of drama to the overall scene. The contrast between the lush woodland and bushes on the right side of the foreground and the rolling valley on the left side further enhances the depth and perspective of the painting and superbly illustrates the traditions of the early 19th century British Art...
