About the Item

"Extensive Early Industrial Landscape with Mill" by John Pennington (1773-1841, British) subsidiary buildings, bleaching fields and a country house beyond, three children with a bird's nest to fore, signed, oil on canvas, framed: 42 x 52 inches condition: very good and ready to hang provenance: Christies Auction stencil marks verso The as yet unidentified location of this accomplished early industrial scene, perhaps commissioned by the mill owner and staffed by his children, could very possibly be Lancashire or adjoining counties in the north of England. There is some uncertainty in the records over whether there may have been up to three named John Pennington, but it is highly probable that they were connected with the several 18th c Liverpool porcelain factories owned at different times by the Pennington family. A John Pennington was a founder member of the Liverpool Academy and exhibited there from Everton Terrace, Liverpool, between 1824-1839. The mills of the early 19th century in the Liverpool region and surrounding areas were integral to the Industrial Revolution, driving economic growth and technological advancement. Mill owners like the Arkwright, Greg, and Peel families played crucial roles in this industrial transformation, influencing both the industry and society. Mill owners accumulated considerable wealth and often held significant social and political influence. They invested in local infrastructure, philanthropy, and sometimes politics. Owners typically lived in grand houses or estates near their mills. These homes were well-appointed and often reflected their owners' wealth and status. Families of mill owners enjoyed a comfortable lifestyle, with access to education, travel, and cultural activities. However, they were also often involved in the management and expansion of their business ventures. The painting is housed in an ornate gold frame, which complements the classical and timeless quality of the artwork. The frame's intricate detailing adds to the overall aesthetic appeal and suggests that this piece was valued and likely displayed in a prominent location. Painted with a beautiful golden light to it, adding to the romantic charm of the scene, it is a wonderful social insight into the prospering class of early 19th century England. It is not only a beautiful painting but a window back in time through our history.
