About the Item

William Westall (1781-1850), served as an artist at age 19 on the Investigator ship, exploring Africa and Australia, then China and India, and another journey to Madeira and Jamaica. He sailed in 1799, leaving his studies at the Royal Academy. Aboard the ship were botanist artists, scientists and explorers. His job: sketch the natural landscapes. Over the next few years his travels included being ship-wrecked, a boat to the shore was swamped with his paintings, and he climbed to the top of a mountain declaring it Mount Westall. His sketches, watercolors and oil paintings have been highly collectible, including the library of the Commonwealth Society of London that collected 139 works, National Maritime Museum, the Royal Academy, Australian government, and the Queen's House. He exhibited widely in the Royal Academy and Associated Artist's exhibition. His works were often re-created as aquatints. Various publishers commissioned watercolors for use on publications including about 45 plates in Ackerman's histories for Oxford and Cambridge, and English public schools. He also published his plates in 'A Picturesque Tour of the River Thames', 1828. This is a rare oil painting on canvas, signed W Westall, lower left. Appears to be original signature under UV light, in likely original 19th century stretcher, and period style ornate gold frame. 8" high by 15" canvas site, in frame approximately 2.5" wide. Most likely this is a later painting in England, perhaps along the Thames in rural England. In overall good condition, ready to hang! Sources include: Australian Dictionary of Biographers, Royal Museums of Greenwich,

Fording the River Landscape British Master Nasmyth 19th century Oil Painting
Located in Stockholm, SE
Signed lower right "Nasmyth" leading to one of the whole pleiad of renowned Scottish artists starting with Alexander Nasmyth (1758 -1840). This painting showcases a scene of a landscape with shallow water, where a family is seen wading through a river ford in knee-deep water. The presence of a shepherdess on a high bank, observing the travelers with keen interest, adds a sense of pastoral charm to the composition. One of the focal points of the painting is a picturesque tree that has fallen into the river, adding a touch of drama to the overall scene. The contrast between the lush woodland and bushes on the right side of the foreground and the rolling valley on the left side further enhances the depth and perspective of the painting and superbly illustrates the traditions of the early 19th century British Art...
