Signed J Steven Dews (lower left) and inscribed (en verso) Oil on canvas A master at rendering ships at sea with outstanding realism, John Steven Dews is widely regarded as the greatest living marine painter. In the present work, Dews' skillful depiction of dynamic movement is fully evident as he faithfully renders the Westward racing towards victory in the King's Cup. Imbued with excitement and energy, the monumental oil on canvas captures the action and excitement of ships at full sail, pulling his viewer into a heart-racing adventure of the race. One of the most legendary racing schooners in the world, the Westward was designed and built by the famed Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, the architect of numerous award-winning vessels, including the Vigilant and Defender. Launched on March 31, 1910 off the coast of Bristol, Rhode Island, the ship's first owner, Alexander Cochran, was eager for her make her mark during this Golden Age of Big Class Racing. She set sail to Europe less than a month after her completion in order to compete in the premier European regattas; she took first in all eleven races that first season. The ship would sail to victory many more times to come, including at the King's Cup of 1934 where she beat King George V's Britannia - a moment which Dews has so masterfully portrayed here. The lightning fast schooner became so renowned that she is still celebrated today; in fact, the Westward Cup Regatta, established in 2010, was named in her honor. This remarkable vessel is dutifully captured in all her glory by Dews, whose skill at photorealism is fully on display. Born in Yorkshire in 1949, Dews learned his trade at the Hull Regional College of Art after being turned down as a candidate at numerous naval academies. He turned to art to express his love for the sea, eventually building a sizable enough portfolio to mount his first exhibition in 1976. An astounding success, nearly the entire collection was sold on opening night, and Dews received 17 new commissions. Ever since his blockbuster opening, Dews has enjoyed remarkable success and critical acclaim, earning numerous prestigious commissions and awards to this day as one of Britain's most sought-after living artists.
