A charming landscape painting of a figure on a country track by Joseph Thors. A woman is shown walking along a lane bordered by with trees on one side. Through the open vista on the left, another figure can be seen in the distance in front of a farmstead and cottages.
Joseph Thors was born in Amsterdam on 25 August, 1835 the son of Samuel Joseph Thors and Jeannette Keijzer. By 1861, he was living in London where he lived in Great Russell Street, Bloomsbury and began earning a living as an artist. He married Hendrina (Harriet) Mendelson in 1862 who was also from Holland and their first son Samuel was born in 1863. Around this time, he began exhibiting at the Royal Academy. He also exhibited at the British Institute and Suffolk Street and in Birmingham between 1869 and 1900.
The family continued living in the Bloomsbury area, before moving to 42, Ampthill Square, St Pancras in the early 1870’s. Sometime after 1881, Thors and his wife moved to Islington. This event may have coincided with the immigration of their son Samuel to New York in 1887. He remained in Islington until after 1891, when he moved to the Midlands area and is listed in the local directories of 1892 as living at 3 Oxford Road in the Erdington area of Birmingham. He also exhibited at local Midland galleries and enjoyed considerable popularity and acclaim. By 1901, he had moved back to Islington in London and had become a British Subject. He died at Islington in 1920.
Thors is considered at member of the Birmingham School, however, his style is also similar to that of the Norwich school, whose work he admired. Both school’s aims were to achieve naturalistic landscape painting which Thors adopted. His landscapes are mainly of figures, animals and rustic cottages set against a backdrop of trees or woodlands. Thors painted with great care and attention to every detail from the figures on the winding paths to the leaves on the trees, which has helped make his works enduringly popular amongst collectors.
Examples of his work can be found in many public collections including the Grundy Art Gallery, Russell-Cotes Art Gallery, Sandwell Museum, Southampton City Art Gallery, The Wilson, Wednesbury Museum and Wolverhampton Art Gallery.
Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.

Joseph Thors
Joseph Thors was born on August 25, 1835, in Amsterdam. He was a landscape painter who lived in London but also painted in the Midlands, where he is regarded as a member of the Birmingham School. His landscapes are mainly rustic cottages, figures and animals, painted in a style similar to that of the Norwich School. Naturalistic landscape painting was the fundamental aim of both the Norwich and Birmingham Schools. Thors was quite prodigious in his output. He was a draughtsman of peaceful little spots of nature, with their little hidden homesteads and winding paths, which he represents, in a refined and contemplative mood. Thors exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, British Institution and Suffolk Street between 1863–1900. At this period in his career, he was very influenced by the Nasmyth and Norfolk schools of painting, hence the darker tones in the landscape. Thors died in 1884, in Islington, London.

Henry Schafer was born in Hanover, Germany in 1841. Although little is known about his upbringing, he was known to have studied at the l'Ecole National de Beaux-Arts in Paris. After leaving art school, he travelled throughout Europe painting town scenes and buildings of Northern France, Belgium and Germany. By 1864, Schafer had travelled to England with his wife Theresa, to work in London where they settled and started a family. All four of their children were born in England. One of his daughters Emilie Anna Schafer (1871-1937) became a painter and art teacher.
Around 1871, the family were living at 53 Vauxhall Bridge Road and in 1881 were recorded as residing at 6, Sophia Terrace, Beulah Road, Thornton Heath in Surrey, with Henry continuing to work as an artist. By 1891, he had moved to 7 St Peters Road in Islington where he lived for the rest of his life. Sometime around the turn of the century, he became a British subject. Schafer is believed to have died in London c1914.

This idyllic late 19th-century oil painting by English artist Edward William Cooke RA (1811-1880) depicts a west-country cove with two cottages, donkeys, figures, and fishing boats. Cooke was a highly renowned painter of marine scenes and landscapes who exhibited extensively at London’s Royal Academy.
From our elevated vantage point, the view extends between two quaint cottages and across the beach before sweeping around the sandy coastline. Crystalline waters lap the shore, where moored craft rest. It’s an accomplished rendering of a challenging composition. It’s enhanced by trees, which essentially ‘frame’ the right side, while a wooded track provides interest on the left.
Cooke was a keen admirer of the Dutch old masters, and the spirit of the Golden Age underpins this splendid work. In diaries, he recorded how he travelled by donkey to access elevated spots in the southwest, so it’s conceivable that he did so here. In his catalogue raisonné, it lists a work from the same year titled ‘Bay with Donkeys’.
Born in Pentonville, London, Cooke was raised in the company of accomplished artists as both his father, George Cooke (1781-1834), and his uncle, William Bernard Cooke (1778-1855), were engravers. As such, they were associated with a circle of Victorian painters who aided Cooke’s early development. These included the highly regarded marine painter Clarkson Frederick Stanfield RA RBA (1793-1867), who provided frequent advice and inspiration. Indeed, as a teenager, Cooke produced numerous drawings after Stanfield’s works.
A precocious talent, by the age of nine, he was already displaying an advanced understanding of engraving, particularly for ships, coupled with a natural, seemingly in-built skill as a draughtsman. Many of his early drawings depict pastoral landscapes after the masters, such as Nicolaes Berchem (1620-1683), Paulus Potter (1625-1654), and Karel Dujardin (1626-1678).
In an extraordinary turn of events, in 1820, his advanced abilities led to his first commission when he provided botanical illustrations for John Loudon's 'Encyclopaedia of Plants’. These were followed by drawings published in the 'Botanical Cabinet...
