About the Item

An oil painting of two trees basking in the summer's golden sun. The sea can be seen in the distance, just beneath the horizon. The sky is a soft blue with a streak of grey clouds. Framed in a simple white floating frame. 12 x 15 inches, framed. Kelly Carmody (b. 1977, Massachusetts) Rooted in realism, Carmody’s compositions start very traditional in subject and composition; however, she further transforms her skilled hand by painting a single subject in multiple mediums and palettes and then using her sketches reference; Carmody’s process has unearthed a unique point of view that feels both contemporary and harkens back to the studio’s of Henri Matisse, or Pierre Bonnard. Carmody has created a world that is beautiful, pleasant, and abundant. Carmody’s paintings play with this tension between flatness and depth as she translates subject into sketch, sketch into painting, and painting into another painting. She often selects compositions with distant backgrounds, close foregrounds, and complex middle-ground subject matter. The spaces are skillfully done, attributing a similar level of detail to each plane, yet remaining distinct with clear relationships. To achieve this level of cohesion in complexity speaks to Carmody’s restraint and skill for impressionism. The women in Carmody’s paintings are pensive, often lost in thought, settled onto chairs near unfinished activities; an open book downfacing on her lap, arms crossed near a bowl of cut fruit, a butter knife left on an empty plate. Surrounded by a rich palette and soft light, the figures in these paintings have a relaxed, contented, contemplative ease that vibrates from the painting and into the space around them.

"Brooklyn Bridge" Oil painting by American Impressionist N.H.White - framed gold
By Nelson White
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
Oil Painting of the Brooklyn Bridge, painted en plein air. A sailboat sails underneath. Painted in a thick, impressionist style. Painting dimensions: 4 x 11 inches Framed dimensions: 9 x 16 inches Framed in a handmade, Italian, custom gold leaf frame. Nelson H. White was born in New London, Connecticut in 1932. White has been surrounded by art and artists from the time he was born. He received his earliest art instruction from his grandfather, Henry Cooke White (1861-1952) and his father Nelson Cooke White (1900-1989), both important American artists. The family lived in Waterford, Connecticut and the elder White had been an early member of the art colony in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Known for his paintings of the Connecticut landscape and shoreline, Henry Cooke White became a teacher to his son, Nelson Cooke White. Living with his parents at the Florence Griswold house in Old Lyme, he met some of the most important and influential artists of the day, Childe Hassam, Will Howe Foote and Harry Hoffman. Later, Nelson White's father began to take his family to summer on Shelter Island and became friendly with many of the artists of the Peconic colony such as Irving Wiles, an important American impressionist. After graduating from the Tabor Academy in Marion, Massachusetts in 1951, Nelson H. White began to study at Mitchell College in Connecticut but left to pursue studies in the violin, musical theory and composition. At this time, he began to spend more time studying art with his father and grandfather. By 1955, Nelson H. White had decided to devote himself to a career as a painter and traveled to Florence, Italy to become an apprentice to Pietro Annigoni, the world-renowned Florentine master. Within two years, the young White had won two awards for his work. While in Florence he also studied with the great Italian teacher, Nerina Simi. Today, White divides his time between the United States and Florence. White is still actively involved with studies at The Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy. Although he has received instruction from some very important artists, White's work is highly individual. He paints with great spirit. Upon seeing his work one quickly senses White’s great love for nature and the outdoors. Through his eyes we are able to view and interpret nature in an intimate manner. Whether Nelson H. White is painting the Connecticut shore, a beach in Italy, a pond on Shelter Island or the hills of Vermont, he allows the observer to view a soft, yet dramatic side of nature. His ability to use color, coupled with rich brush work and a graduation of light, air and atmosphere allows one to enjoy a certain mood which is clearly conveyed in White's paintings. It is a mood that leaves us with a lasting impression. White has shown his work in numerous galleries across the globe since the 1950s, from the United States all the way to Italy and Russia. White's first museum restrospective was in the New Britain Museum of American Art in July 2012. His work can be found in many private and public collections, as well as several museums. Art Education 1999- present The Florence Academy of Art, Florence, Italy 1956-1987 Student of Ms. Nerina Simi, Florence Italy 1955-1980 Apprentice to Pietro Annigoni, Florence, Italy abd studied watercolor painting with Ogden Pleissner...

"Summer Landscape, " Joseph DeCamp, Boston Ten American Impressionists
By Joseph Rodefer DeCamp
Located in New York, NY
Joseph Rodefer DeCamp (1858 - 1923) Summer Landscape Oil on board 11 x 15 inches Signed lower right Born in Cincinnati, Ohio on November 5, 1858, Joseph DeCamp began his artistic career in his teens and remained active throughout his life. Although he initially painted landscapes, Decamp became a renowned and respected portraitist. He was famous for his images of men of high society and women within domestic interiors. Decamp began his artistic training in 1873 when he enrolled in the McMicken School of Art and Design in Cincinnati. The head of the school, Thomas Satterwhite Noble, was a European-trained painter whose "insistence on rigorous draftsmanship, true to the academic manner in which he had been trained, exerted a lasting influence on DeCamp." DeCamp studied under Noble for five years, but was also a student of Frank Duveneck at the Ohio Mechanics Institute. He adopted Duveneck's bold, realistic style and many of his paintings executed throughout the 1870s and 1880s reflect this influence. Like most American artists of his generation, DeCamp went abroad to study. In 1878, following in the footsteps of Duveneck and other Midwesterners, he traveled to Munich to attend the Royal Bavarian Academy. Soon after his arrival, however, he gravitated away from the academy and towards Duveneck and eventually followed his mentor to Florence and Venice. During these years, DeCamp focused on landscape and portraiture as his primary subjects. These themes would continue to occupy the artist when he returned to America in 1883. When DeCamp arrived back in the United States in 1883, he first settled in Cincinnati, but soon moved to Cleveland to teach at what is now Case Western Reserve University. He then relocated once more to the Boston area, where he would remain for most of his life. DeCamp began teaching at Wellesley Female Academy and, in the fall of 1885, began as an instructor at the School of Drawing and Painting at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He quickly established himself as one of the leading figures in the Boston art community and became a founding member of The Ten American Painters, formulated in 1897. This group included Childe Hassam, John Henry Twachtman, Julian Alden Weir, Frank Benson, Thomas Dewing, Willard Metcalf, Robert Reid, Edward Simmons...
