Biography
Greenwood was born in 1897 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She studied at Temple University, La France Art Institute, and graduated in 1933 from the Moore College of Art and Design (then the Moore Institute). Her studies continued at the Barnes Foundation and with Earle Horter.
She was active in Philadelphia and exhibited her work in the city at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and in New York and Washington, D.C. Greenwood painted portraits, especially of young women, floral still lifes, and landscapes. She painted with oils on canvas and over her career her brush strokes became more free and expressive. She also worked in watercolor, and was elected a member of the Philadelphia Watercolour Club and was also a member of The Plastic Club. Greenwood was proficient in pastels. She made Impressionist and Regionalist works, but was a particularly adventurous Modernist.
Greenwood taught fine art and was a lecturer on American art history.
Greenwood died in Philadelphia on July 25, 1951, at the age of 54. She was buried in the Cedar Hill Cemetery on July 30.[3] There was an exhibition of her work held in 1987 at the Lagakos-Turak Gallery entitled "Laura M. Greenwood: American Paintings of the 1930s and 40s."
Greenwood possessed old-fashioned painterly virtues and was not particularly interested in new approaches, although there are echoes of one of her teachers, modernist Earle Horter, in some of her work. Relaxed, loosely brushed and relying on a bright palette, her especially hearty and amiable tabletop still lifes and her infrequent but interesting landscapes represent a solid and very respectable achievement. Her portrait and figure subjects have a decorative, early-20th century charm, but threaded through this show are some paintings best described as competent but uninspired.

Manayunk Schuylkill River Factory City Scene Philadelphia GIOVANNI MARTINO 1970
By Giovanni Martino
Located in Rancho Santa Fe, CA
Provenance: Private Collection, San Diego, CA.
Framed
Giovanni Martino, National Academy of Design* member, was born on May 1, 1908 in Philadelphia PA where all seven brothers and one sister, Filomina, Frank, Antonio, Albert, Ernest, Giovanni, Edmond, and William became painters. They were under the tutelage of their eldest brother, Frank, who in the late 1920s, founded the first commercial art* studio, Martino Studios, at 27 South 18th Street.
Besides studying with his two eldest brothers, Giovanni also studied with Albert Jean Adolph at La France Institute, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts*, The Graphic Sketch Club, and Spring Garden Institute in Philadelphia. In his mid teens he accompanied his two eldest brothers to New Hope searching for subjects to paint. In the 1930s, he also started to paint in Manayunk, a hilly mill town along the Schuylkill River. At this time he signed his paintings M. Giovanni.
These colorful impressionistic* works proceeded more thinly painted dramatically poetic street scenes of the mill town. These images developed into impasto* laden oils in the 1960's with some of the paintings worked with a palette knife*.
In Manayunk, he was a common sight on the streets and sidewalks, painting on-the-spot with his wife, Eva Marinelli and his two daughters, Nina & Babette. In the 1980's and 90's he also painted in Conshohocken and Norristown with his youngest daughter, Babette. His paintings became more sharply executed like his earlier work but were more colorful. In the late '90's he worked in his studio to enlarge paintings.
He is the recipient of over 100 awards and honors. He received the Benjamin Altman Prize in Landscape Painting in 1975 at the National Academy of Design, NYC where he was elected an Academician (NA) in 1944. He mentored not only his wife and two daughters but also taught at Lehigh University and the Graphic Sketch Club, Philadelphia.
He died at his home in Blue Bell on February 1, 1997. (Babette Martino...

John E. Thompson 'High Bridge, NYC' Signed Oil Painting, American, 1924
By John Edward Thompson
Located in Denver, CO
This original 1924 oil painting by acclaimed Colorado modernist John E. Thompson captures the architectural grandeur of High Bridge, New York City’s oldest standing bridge, as it spans the Harlem River. A powerful blend of realism and early modernist style, the composition highlights the bridge’s elegant arches and structural detail, all rendered in richly textured oil on canvas.
Thompson’s masterful brushwork and use of color breathe life into the urban landscape, creating a dynamic visual tribute to one of NYC’s most iconic 19th-century engineering feats. The painting is signed and dated in the lower right corner, adding historical authenticity and collector appeal. It is housed in a custom vintage frame, complementing the period and enhancing its timeless aesthetic.
This rare depiction of early 20th-century New York City is an important work for collectors of vintage American art, urban landscapes, and historical landmarks. It bridges two artistic worlds—urban realism and the advent of modernism—making it a standout piece in any serious collection.
About the Artist: John E. Thompson – Pioneer of Colorado Modernism
John Edward Thompson (1876–1945) is widely regarded as the "Dean of Colorado Artists", known for his pivotal role in introducing European modernist techniques to the American West. Born in Buffalo, Thompson studied at the Art Students League of Buffalo and later in New York City, before immersing himself in Europe’s avant-garde movements, particularly influenced by Paul Cézanne.
In 1914, Thompson settled in Denver, where he would become a transformative force in the local art scene. His teachings and leadership helped lay the foundation for Colorado’s modern art movement, and he later served as a faculty member at both the University of Denver and the Santa Fe Art School, alongside contemporaries like Andrew Dasburg, B.J.O. Nordfeldt, and Walter Ufer.
Thompson also mentored key figures such as Józef Bakoś and Walter Mruk, who would go on to co-found Los Cinco Pintores...
