About the Item

A really charming little oil capturing an idyllic snapshot of farm workers and their family harvesting in the sunshine Attributed to Léon Augustin L'Hermitte (1844-1925) Harvesters in th field Oil on board 5 x 7 inches without the frame 8 x 10½ inches with the frame Leon Augustin L'Hermitte was a French painter known for his depictions of rural life in late 19th-century France. He was born on July 31, 1844, in Mont-Saint-Père, a village in the Aisne department of northern France. L'Hermitte showed an early aptitude for drawing, which was encouraged by his family. He began his formal artistic education at the École Impériale de Dessin in Paris and later studied under the renowned landscape painter, Horace Lecoq de Boisbaudran. L'Hermitte's early works were primarily landscapes and genre scenes, influenced by the Barbizon School and the Realist movement. L'Hermitte gained recognition for his mastery of pastel and charcoal techniques, which he used to create richly detailed and atmospheric works. His paintings often depicted peasant life, laborers working in the fields, and rural landscapes, capturing the natural beauty and hardships of countryside existence. One of L'Hermitte's most famous works is "The Gleaners," which portrays women gathering leftover grain after the harvest—a theme that resonated with the social and economic issues of his time. This painting earned him widespread acclaim and established his reputation as a leading figure in the Naturalist movement. Throughout his career, L'Hermitte exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and received numerous awards and honors for his work. He also enjoyed success internationally, with his paintings exhibited in cities such as London and New York. L'Hermitte's dedication to portraying the lives of rural workers earned him the nickname "painter of the humble." His works are characterized by their sensitivity to light and shadow, as well as their meticulous attention to detail. He was admired for his ability to capture the dignity and resilience of his subjects, despite their often difficult circumstances. Leon L'Hermitte continued to paint prolifically until his death on July 22, 1925, leaving behind a legacy of poignant and evocative images that continue to inspire admirers of 19th-century French art. Today, his works can be found in museums and private collections around the world, a testament to his enduring influence on the art world.
