An idyllic view of cattle and sheep grazing in a pasture before an oak tree with a blue sky with bollowing clouds beyond. William S Rose (1810-1873) Cattle and sheep grazing in rough pastures Signed and inscribed on a label verso Oil on panel 6½ x 9 inches without frame 10½ x 12½ inches with the frame William S Rose was a landscape and genre painter, working exclusively in oil, who painted chiefly the rural scenery of the Home Counties. Lived in St. Mary Cray, Kent; Wargrave; Foot's Cray, Kent, and Edenbridge. Exhibited from 1845-73, at the RA (1853-73), BI, SS and elsewhere, titles at the RA including 'Kentish Heath Scene' 1853, 'A Rustic Village' 1863, and "Water Mill, Ashdown Forest' . The Artist's Journal noted in his obituary: "His pictures - small landscapes painted with taste and feeling, from the pleasant scenery of Kent and Sussex - were seen almost annually in the Academy and BI"
