Three Angels in a Park Scene Hess Marcel Brussels 1878 – 1948 Grimbergen Belgian Painter Signature: Signed bottom right Medium: Drawing on paper Dimensions: Image size 40 x 30 cm, frame size 55,50 x 45,50 cm Biography: Hess Marcel was born in 1878 in Brussel. He was a Belgian painter and drawer of portraits, nudes and flowers. He studied at the Academies of Brussels with master teacher Jean-François Portaels (1818-1895) and Düsseldorf, Germany. He traveled to Morocco. Hees Marcel is notable for his fine and vibrant sensitivity and his rich and distinguished colouring. He used mixed media and elevated his drawings with coloured pencil. He had limited number of exhibitions and retrospective in Brussels “La Petite Galerie”. He died in 1948 in Grimbergen. Today, his works can be found in private and public collections, including in Museums in Ixelles and Sint-Joost-ten-Node.

Hans was the son of a pastor, orphaned at a young age and raised by his grandfather. Hans Volcker was a painter of landscapes, seascapes, still lives and portraits. He also painted in watercolour and fresco techniques. In 1885, Volcker was a student of famed Norwegian realist painter Hans Fredrik Gude (1825 – 1903) at the Berlin Academy. His teacher encouraged him to travel to Scandinavia. During his study trips, he made landscape paintings of Scandinavian mountain and lakes, that brought him later great recognition. In 1891, he led his own plein air painting school. The most famous pupils were german sculptor and painter Margarethe Haeffner (1884 – 1977) and the painter Oskar Moll (1875 – 1947). With his Berlin friend painter Walter Leistikow (1865 – 1908), who was also a pupil of Gude, he shared an admiration for Max Liebermann (1847 – 1935). His acquaintance with Liebermann’s paintings furthered his stylistic development to an Impressionism. In 1894 he lived in Munich and moved to Wiesbaden in 1899, where he was active as a contemporary artist and as a member of the Art Societies, presenting Max Liebermann, Fritz Overbeck or Lovis Corinth, among others. He was a Belgian impressionist painter of landscapes, marines, harbour scenes, architectures, interiors, city and canal views, portraits and figures. He was also a watercolourist. Gilsoul studied at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts with the famed master teachers and artists François Courtens (1854 - 1895) and Louis Artan (1837 - 1890). In 1882 he won his first prize at the Academy and in 1884 debuted at the Brussels Salon. He studied also at the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts, where he won a prize (1885-1890). Gilsoul  was member of the group ‘Voorwaerts’ in 1891. He was awarded a silver medal at the Paris World Fair in 1900. Signature: Signed lower right and inscribed verso Dimensions: Framed: 28.5"x35" Unframed: 21.5"x28" Provenance: Exhibited : The Royal Scottish Academy under the section for "Distinguished Foreigners" in 1914 (original acceptance letter verso) Modest Huys (25 October 1874, in Zulte – 30 January 1932, in Zulte) was a Flemish impressionist and luminist painter, who is regarded as one of the greatest Belgian painters of the 20th century. From a young age, Modest Huys worked in his father's painting and decorating business and later studied at the "Gentse Nijverheidschool" (Ghent Industrial School). In 1891 or 1892, he came into contact with Emile Claus, who encouraged his artistic inclinations. In 1900, he enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts where his teachers were Eugène Joors and Frans Van Leemputten but he never completed his studies. It was about this time that he became lifelong friends with the author Stijn Streuvels. In 1902, he debuted at the Sint-Lucasgilde in Kortrijk and began to exhibit more widely.
