White and Pink Peonies in Vase, Charles Swyncop, Brussels 1895 – 1970, Signed
Located in Bruges, BE
White and Pink Peonies in Vase Charles Swyncop Brussels 1895 – 1970 Belgian Painter Signature: Signed top left Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: Image size 46 x 38 cm, frame size 64 x 56 cm Biography: Swyncop Charles was born in Brussels in 1895. Charles was a painter of landscapes, city views, seascapes, still lifes, flowers, children, genre scenes, figures (often Spanish beauties) and portraits. He was also illustrator and lithographer. Younger brother and pupil of Philippe Swyncop. He studied at the Academy of Brussels (1908-1917 and 1919-1920) with as teachers, J. Delville, H. Richir and Alfred Bastien. He also travelled to Rome and Venice. In Rome he studied iconography and the study of the great masters. Also found, like his brother, inspiration in Spain. Like his brother, he painted in a lighter genre. But, unlike his brother, he used subtle, spontaneous brushstrokes such as the French Fauvists. His colourful sea views are reminiscent of the works of Henri Matisse and André Derain. In 1920 Swyncop assisted his teacher Alfred Bastien with the panoramic painting “Panorama de l’Yser”. Other assistant painters were Charles Léonard and Jef Bonheur, also former pupils of Bastien. The work was done in what later became the mosque of the Cinquantenaire Park. From 1924 onwards, it was given a suitable panoramic building in Ostend. The canvas was severely damaged during the Second World War. Charles Swyncop took part in a group exhibition at ‘Maison d’Art Moderne’ in Brussels in 1920 together with Jean Colin, Philippe Swyncop, Arthur Navez, Samuel Milbauer, L. Bisschops, J. Payro and Jean-Jacques Gailliard. He received an honourable mention (third prize) on the Prize of Rome in 1920. In the years 1922-1923 he made study trips to Spain and Italy. There he made portraits of the local population. He regularly returned to Spain. Commissioned by the Ministry of Colonies, he painted decorative panels for the 1930 World Fair in Antwerp. Swyncop was a member of the group ‘La Lierre’ and took part in the annual exhibitions. Other members of ‘La Lierre’ included Alfred Bastien, Julius Brouwers, Louis Clesse, Henri De Clerck...

Roger Marcel Limouse, (Algerian/French 1894 - 1989) Still Life, October 1939, Oil on canvas. Signed upper right and marked Oct 39 on back. Greens, Blues, and Yellow/Browns prevail in this still life of a table with fruits, cake, and a candle. Nude is painted verso on stretched canvas under frame. Frame 24.5 x 28.875 x 1.625, Canvas 21.875 x 23.875 A student of Paul Albert Laurens (1870-1934) at the Académie Julian, his figurative work, very colorful, with powerful and stripped down forms, made him one of the last representatives of Fauvism and the eldest of the group of Painters of Poetic Reality. He belongs to the School of Paris. In 1943, Jacques de Laprade dedicated a book to Roger Limouse in the collection "The Masters of Tomorrow" directed by Francis Carco. He writes, "One of the characteristics of this personality is strength. There is nothing in Limouse that lacks relief. This small and extremely vigorous man seduces by his direct and dru language, by his deep conviction, by the picturesque of his stories, by his very life which testifies to his energy. In 1948, Roger Limouse was appointed professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris (Professor at the School of Fine Arts). He held this position until 1964. In 1949, the journalist Gisèle d'Assailly (1904-1969) devoted a book "With the Painters of Poetic Reality" to eight friendly painters, supporters of a colorful and intimate figurative painting of French inspiration, Maurice Brianchon, Christian Caillard...

19th Century still life oil painting of fruit & flowers in a basket
Located in Moreton-In-Marsh, Gloucestershire
Edward Ladell British, (1821–1886) Still Life of Fruit & Flowers in a Basket Oil on canvas, signed with monogram Image size: 13.5 inches x 11.75 inches Size including frame: 20.75 inches x 19 inches An exquisitely painted still life of roses and fruit by Edward Ladell. Pink and yellow rose blooms are depicted with black and white grapes and a pear on a marble topped table. Behind them, a basket of fruit containing plums and a nectarine can also be seen. Edward Ladell was born in Hasketon, Suffolk on 12 April, 1821 the son of Christmas Ladell a coachbuilder and his wife Mary Birch. He was a self-taught artist and initially worked in his father’s business in Colchester as an engraver. He is also believed to have worked as a pattern designer for a Flemish textile company in Colchester. In 1848 he married Julianna Roofe and they spent their married life living at East Hill in Colchester. During his spare time he began producing still life paintings in the Dutch traditions and in 1856 made his debut at the Royal Academy with a ‘Study from Nature’. He also exhibited at the British Institute from 1857 and the Royal Society of British Artists from 1858. Ladell’s exposure at the London galleries began earning him commissions and by 1861, he had become a full time artist. He was highly successful in his lifetime, earning many commissions and commanding high prices for his work. He became one of the best known still life painters of his generation. During the late 1860’s, after the death of his first wife and child, he began teaching art. One of his pupils was Ellen Maria Levett who he later married in 1878 and together they had a son. His wife Ellen Ladell...

"Still life of Flowers Bouquet on Alabaster" circa 1820's
Located in SANTA FE, NM
"Still life of Flower Bouquet on Alabaster" circa 1820's Gouache on alabaster 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 (12 3/4 x 10 3/4 frame) inches Follower of Pierre Joseph Redouté 1759-1840, the artist brought all the finesse and care required for this work to seduce us and hold our attention at first glance, delicately painted in gouache on an alabaster plate, he added here and there a drop of water which adds freshness to the whole while showing us his virtuosity. A white rose, a parrot tulip and a few forget-me-nots to enhance the composition and the harmonious bouquet bursts with gaiety against a background of luminous alabaster. Unsigned, this gouache dates from the years 1820 - 1830, it is enhanced by a channel frame which has retained its original gilding. Redouté was an official court artist of Marie Antoinette, and continued painting through the French Revolution and Reign of Terror. He survived the turbulent political upheaval to gain international recognition for his precise renderings of plants, which remain as fresh in the early 21st century as when first painted. He combined great artistic skills with a pleasing, ingratiating personality which assisted him with his influential patrons. After Queen Marie-Antoinette, his patrons included both of Napoleon's wives -- Empress Joséphine and Marie Louise, Duchess of Parma—as well as Maria Amalia...
