About the Item

This landscape painting is by Margery Ammon, a noted California plein air artist who currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area. The painting depicts the Beckstoffer Vineyard in Napa Valley. It is autumn, and the colors are rich and warm. The painting measures 24”x36”. The painting is signed in the lower right “M Ammon”. On the reverse, upper stretcher, it is titled and signed, “Beckstoffer Vineyard, Napa Valley California, Margery Ammon.” There is also a catalog number on the reverse that makes me believe the painting was done in 2003. The painting is in good condition with a tiny loss in the upper right corner sky, visible upon very close inspection. Born in California, Margery Ammon was raised in a family of artists. Her mother was a teacher and actress, while her father was director of a large community theater where he directed plays as well as designed sets and costumes. Ammon showed a talent for drawing and painting at a young age and continued to study art and art history through college years. She spent her third and fifth years of University at Aix-en-Provence studying French Literature and absorbing the vistas of Paul Cezanne’s mountain, the Mont St. Victoria. Summers following these two academic years were spent visiting the great cities and museums of Europe. The passion of art that began in her childhood blossomed. Although her fascination with art began early, she didn’t begin painting in oils until 1991 when she discovered the gifted artist and teacher Peggy Doughty. She also studied the discipline of drawing with Bill Yokoyama for several years. Spending five years as an amateur, she became serious about painting in 1996. When she became a full-time painter, it was at this time that she began showing her paintings professionally in Carmel. Since then her paintings can be found in collections in the United States, Canada, and Europe. She has shown her work in Carmel, San Francisco, Yountville, St. Helena, and in Danville, California. She was honored to be included in the Napa Valley Museum’s Plein Aire Biennial in 2003, and received First Place for the People’s Choice Award. She was juried into the National Association of Woman Artists in New York in 2003. One of her vineyard paintings was to chosen as the cover art for Concierge Magazine, July 2005 to August 2006. She was named a finalist in the American Artists Magazine’s cover competition of 2007.
