About the Item
The Italian artist Mario Cortiella (1907-1981), through his pictorial work, aligns himself with the tradition of expressive figurative painting, evoking the atmospheres of the School of Paris and the painters of Montmartre or Montparnasse, heirs to Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.
This landscape, dated 1953, depicts a lively Parisian square (Parigi, as referred to by Italians), lined with buildings whose facades are rhythmically punctuated by windows and dark rooftops. The brushwork is swift and expressive, with strokes that occasionally recall the spontaneity of urban sketches. A café with a red awning is visible alongside streetlamps that guide the viewer’s gaze into the depth of the perspective. The gray sky, likely captured in the light of a late winter or autumn afternoon, lends a muted and melancholic atmosphere, accentuated by a restrained palette of beiges, browns, and bluish grays. The urban activity is understated: a few blurred, hurried figures move on foot or by bicycle, while others appear frozen in conversation or more intimate moments. The artist does not seek precise detail but conveys a sense of movement and everyday life. The framing of the scene suggests an almost cinematic vision.
In 1953, Paris was still marked by the aftermath of the war, a city gradually regaining its cultural and economic vitality. Far from the modernizations that would transform the capital in the following decades, Cortiella’s vision preserves the charm of old Paris—the Paris of popular cafés, small shops, and streets animated by ordinary passersby. One can still discern the influence of Parisian scenes immortalized by Utrillo, Gen Paul, and the painters of Montmartre.

View All"Parisian Street", Cityscape Oil on Canvas by Robert Farrington
Located in Pasadena, CA
This Robert Farrington's painting serves as a visual gateway to a distinct period in post-war France, composed with a deep respect for the elements interwoven into the collective memory of Paris. His work adeptly engages with the archetypal settings and concepts that convey the quintessence of this beloved and frequently visited capital.
As the viewer gazes upon this artwork, they are instantly immersed in the ambiance of a food trade street, and especially the familiar historic brasserie “Au Pied de Cochon” - the sole establishment in the painting that still exists nowadays - and its surroundings at the heart of the bustling Halles district. At "6 Rue Coquillère", the act of opening the doors, each adorned with handles that resemble pig's trotters, transports one through a temporal gateway into the quintessential French world of "la cochonnaille"... The renowned "Pied de Cochon" restaurant made its debut in 1947. In its early days, it became the preferred gathering place for the "Forts des Halles" – the diligent laborers who tirelessly transported goods through the pavilions of the old Halles de Paris. From these dedicated workers to the luminaries of the time, this establishment emerged as a symbol of Parisian life. Farrington reconstructs a scene around this restaurant, nourished by her own Parisian experience when he was a young American living in France. An iconic Brigitte Bardot poster...

"The Bridge over the Seine Near Argenteuil" Oil Reproduction after Claude Monet
By (after) Claude Monet
Located in Pasadena, CA
This framed reproduction of Claude Monet's immensely popular painting, “The Bridge Over The Seine Near Argenteuil,” comes with a certificate of authenticity on the back and is numbered 1102, making it interesting for several reasons.
The artagraphic process used to produce this work in a limited edition of 2900 is considered the state-of-the-art in art reproduction and the most respectful approach to reproducing a painting by a master. In three steps, this technique creates a 3D replica of an original oil painting's color and surface texture. Colors are scanned with a digital laser and then printed separately using oil-based inks on a single sheet. A mold is created from the original painting to reproduce its surface texture and bas-relief brushstrokes. Unlike lithographs and serigraphs, there is a palpable material and relief if you run your fingers over the surface.
At the Impressionist group's first exhibition in 1874, Claude Monet demonstrated his deep interest in the motif by working on seven depictions of the Argenteuil bridge and four of the railroad bridge upstream. The artwork depicts Monet's immediate impressions of the scene rather than offering detailed realism. In these series, moored sailboats occupy the foreground, while the fluidity of the river melts harmoniously with the geometrically contrasted presence of the bridge and its imposing pillars. Monet manipulates his palette and complementary color schemes to create the illusion of light and movement through small, separate, and visible brushstrokes, making it one of the artist's most recognizable signatures. The painting displays a diversity of styles, with some elements more solid, having strong and distinct lines and structured forms defined by firm contours, while the water and the sky in the background give off an impression of moving space, floating, and ripples.
An original painting of the series can be seen at Musée d'Orsay in Paris, France...
