Mary Cane Robinson
Framed Colorado Springs Mountain Landscape, Original Oil Painting on Board

About the Item

Mountain Landscape, Near Colorado Springs, Colorado is an original oil on board painting by acclaimed American modernist Mary Cane Robinson. Executed in a vertical format, this expressive composition features rolling foothills, layered mountain peaks, and a harmonious blend of earthy and atmospheric tones—a testament to Robinson’s lyrical approach to nature and form. Rendered in Robinson’s signature modernist style, this landscape captures the spirit of Colorado’s Front Range with an intuitive blend of abstraction and realism, evoking the serene energy of the natural world. Medium: Oil on board Framed dimensions: 28 ⅞" H x 18 ⅝" W x 1 ½" D Image size: 23 ½" H x 13 ¼" W Provenance: Private Collection, Denver, Colorado A rare find for collectors of Colorado modernism, women artists, and mid-20th-century American art. About the Artist: Mary Cane Robinson (1910–2002) Mary Cane Robinson was born in New York City in 1910 to prominent parents: Florence Cane, a pioneer in progressive art education, and Melville Cane, a copyright attorney and poet. She studied art in Munich with Hans Hofmann, one of the founders of Abstract Expressionism, and later with Jean Charlot and at Pratt Institute. Robinson’s work reflects a synthesis of major 20th-century movements, including Fauvism, Cubism, and Abstract Expressionism. Her visual language, however, remained uniquely personal—imbued with a deep spiritual connection to nature, landscape, and color as emotion. After relocating to Denver in 1947, Robinson became a vital figure in the Colorado art scene. She exhibited widely, taught at the Denver Art Museum, Graland School, and showed in numerous venues including the Boulder Center for Visual Arts, the Jewish Community Center, and regional institutions in San Antonio and Los Angeles. Her expressive style has drawn comparisons to Arthur Dove and Marsden Hartley, emphasizing the poetic, nonobjective qualities of the natural world. Robinson worked in multiple media—oil, watercolor, pastel, acrylic, and printmaking—and consistently used her art as a medium for introspection and connection. “Each picture is an unfolding, a partnership of trust… trust in the unknown.” – Mary Cane Robinson Her dedication to emotional authenticity and formal exploration earned her recognition as one of Colorado’s most celebrated modernist painters.
