About the Item

Oil on artist's board, late 20th century, signed P. Zimmerman Reminiscent of the Mid Century Social Realist and WPA works of Ben Shahn this captures an architectural street scape. Paul Zimmerman, N.A. (1921-2007). Paul W. Zimmerman was an internationally known artist and professor emeritus of the Hartford Art School. Born April 29, 1921, in Toledo, Ohio, the son of Robert Frazee and Ethel Pearl (Cramer) Zimmerman, Zimmerman passed away December 15, 2007 in Hartford, Connecticut. Always a great admirer of Cezanne, Zimmerman was particularly drawn to the French painter's innovations regarding space and the fracturing of the traditional picture plane. In 1947, Henrik M. Mayer, Director of the Hartford Art School at the time, invited Zimmerman to join the faculty. What began as a two-year agreement became a 40-year career. He remained true to his personal artistic vision throughout his long distinguished career and continued to work in his studio, remain engaged in the artistic community and teach part-time at the West Hartford Art League, West Hartford, CT throughout his retirement. A prolific landscape painter, Zimmerman's oils and watercolors are found in numerous museum, corporate and private collections, including the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts; the Springfield Museum of Fine Arts; the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; the Wadsworth Atheneum; The Slater Museum; the University of Notre Dame; Lehigh University; First New Haven National Bank and United Technologies Corporation. He was also commissioned to design a series of murals for Chase Manhattan Bank in New York. Zimmerman is listed in Davenport's, A Grand Tradition: Art and Artists of the Hoosier Salon, and Who was Who in American Art. Born in Toledo Ohio in 1921, he studied at the John Herron Art School and earned his BFA degree in 1946. His work has been represented by galleries in New York, Maine, Connecticut, Ohio, etc. He was an associate member of the National Academy of Design in 1959 and became a full member of the National Academy of Design in 1972. Zimmerman was also a member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts and the Connecticut Water Color Society. His work was exhibited at the famed Hoosier Salon Indiana in 1944, 1948, 1950, 1952, 1955. Also his work was exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery, John Herron Art Musuem Indianapolis, University of Illinois, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts annuals, Connecticut Water Color Society, the National Academy of Design, and the New Britain Museum of American Art. Large Colorado Modernist Oil Painting Wharf Street Plein Air New Orleans Street
By Joellyn Duesberry
Located in Surfside, FL
Joellyn T Duesberry Wall on Wharf Street, #513, New Orleans, LA 1976. Oil on linen Dimensions: (Frame) H 50.5" x W 66.5". sight size 50 x 66" Joellyn Toler Duesberry (1944 – 2016) was a plein air landscape artist who worked in oils. She said that her paintings echo the work of John Marin and Milton Avery. Of her art, Duesberry said, "I am not interested in a realist painting, I am not interested in an abstract painting. I am interested in the tension." Joellyn Duesberry was born on June 30, 1944 in Richmond, Virginia. Growing up in rural Virginia instilled in her a love for the land. She said, "All my life I think I've unconsciously tried to recreate the place where bliss or terror first came to me. Both emotions seemed so strong that I had to locate them outside of myself, in the land. This goes back to a childhood habit of living in rural Virginia and seeking woods and creeks and lakes for solitary refuge; places where I could sketch and paint." She decided to start painting at age ten after being given a pair of red tennis shoes and walking on the beach, inspired by the colorful juxtaposition of sand, shadow, and shoe. Soon thereafter she decided that "Women artists existed and she needed to be among them." She received a BA with Distinction, Phi Beta Kappa, in art history and painting, from Smith College in 1966. In that year she was awarded a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship. While at Smith, she "honed her skills by making countless copies of masterworks." She took her master's degree at New York University Institute of Fine Arts. Despite her degrees, she is considered to be a self-taught artist. Joellyn Duesberry was a plein air painter, who began "her canvases outdoors on an easel and finished] them in the studio, frequently making monotypes in between." She moved to Denver in 1985, and embraced the Colorado landscape in her art. In that year she received an Individual Painting Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to work with Richard Diebenkorn. In 1997, Duesberry won the Benjamin Altman Landscape Prize from the National Academy of Design. While she had a World Views residency with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) from 1998-1999, Duesberry painted city studies in studio space in some vacant offices of the World Trade Center's North Tower. She says that, because of her connection to the World Trade Center, the tone of her painting saddened after 9/11. In 2005, a PBS documentary was made of Joellyn Duesberry's life, work, and creative process titled Joellyn Duesberry: Dialogue with the Artist. Her works are held by institutions such as Metropolitan Museum of Art and Smith College Museum of Art. Publications 1998: A Covenant of Seasons: Monotypes by Joellyn T. Quai De La Tournelle, Paris Street Scene Oil Painting, American Deaf Modernist
By Robert Freiman
Located in Surfside, FL
Paris street scene oil painting in original vintage hand carved frame, showing some wear. Signed l.r. and dated 1953. Inscribed on reverse with title. 28.50 in. by 33.50 in. include frame. Unframed 19.75 in. by 24 in. Robert Freiman, deaf from birth, was born in March 1917 in New York City. He attended an oral program near his home and later transferred to the Lexington School for the Deaf when he was six. Early in his childhood, his love for drawing, painting and studying became apparent, and as an adult, he continued his studies in New York at the National Academy of Design, Pratt Institute, the Art Students League and the Parsons School of Design. In Paris, France he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Bob Freiman was especially focused on painting portraits and figures in motion in various mediums, especially the mixed-media combination of watercolor, acrylic and pen. Among his subjects were acrobats, ballet dancers, cyclists and other athletes. He as well focused on abstracts for a time, discovering new media in his works with quick brushwork and expressive movements. In the latter part of his career, his style became abstract and surreal with images of metaphysical landscapes with architectural elements such as arches, towers, pyramids and castles floating in the air. The famed art critic Pierre Rouve wrote: “It is therefore refreshing to see them revitalized by the colourist wealth and virile handwriting of Robert Freiman, probably the best American water-colorist since John Marin. He worked in Provincetown and Nantucket and regularly exhibited there. He showed at Doll & Richards gallery of Boston alongside John Chetcuti, Lloyd Goodrich, Tod Lindenmuth, William Meyerowitz, Dwight Shepler, Elizabeth O'Neill Verner, Stanley Woodward, Andrew Wyeth, and others. His work bears the influence of the mid century school of Paris in particular Jean Carzou. He was a regular exhibitor at the Sidewalk Art...
