Per Wickenberg was a Swedish artist active in the early 19th century.
He was only 34 when he died of tuberculosis; thankfully for the art history - at that point, he had practised the art of painting for more than 20 years.
After his art studies at the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm, he left Stockholm and travelled to Paris in 1837.
In Paris, he finally received the well-deserved success for his landscapes; he won golden medals at the Salon de Paris both in 1838 for his painting "Nordiskt vinterlandskap" and in 1839 for a painting called "Vinterfiske".
Per received a travel scholarship from Sweden and used that money for trips to Belgium and the Netherlands.
Our painting is from that time, the time after his success in Paris, and in this magnificent painting, we see his talent in capturing the cold winter mood with meticulous care of details.
Notice how nicely painted the children are on the ice, the sledge filled with hay to provide comfort and insulation against the cold.
In the background, we can see an ice skater, a detail that gives the painting depth and three-dimensionality.
This is a wonderful painting by a talented artist - who devoted almost his entire life to the art of painting.

John Ferneley Sr (1782-1860) was born the son of a Leicestershire wheelwright, the youngest of six children. He is known as one of the great British equine artists, perhaps only second to Stubbs in terms of raw ability.
Ferneley originally worked with his father, until by chance the Duke of Rutland saw some of his work on the side of a cart on which Ferneley and his father had been working. The Duke was so impressed with Ferneley that he persuaded John's father to allow him to become the pupil of Benjamin Marshall. Ferneley was so talented that apparently he produced almost perfect copies of his tutor's paintings and they were said to have been indistinguishable from the master’s. Marshall also enrolled him as a student of the Royal Academy Schools.

The painting is in very good condition, having had a light clean. There is some slight crazing to the sky section as to be expected with age, ( see photo close ups with flash) the frame is also in very good condition.
There is a handwritten label verso which reads
Note: According to Cooper, it was during a visit to Lee in Devon that a mutual decision was made to '...paint some pictures conjointly'. Lee was to paint the landscape first and Cooper to introduce the animals - and, at Lee's insistence, to handle the financial arrangements. In the late 1840s both artists were at the height of their popularity and their exhibited collaborations in the Dutch tradition created a 'great sensation' at the Royal Academy when they first appeared.
Prince Albert commented that they had '...caused a new want among patrons' and pronounced them 'the Beaumont and Fletcher...

It depicts “A Breton Courtship” in blue hot summer tones and is married well with the French Barbizon frame. The couple sit opposite each other, on either side of the road they are travelling together. A fantastic painting. This is a large oil on canvas by the Scottish artist who is one of my favourite artists of the period. George Sherwood Hunter was a well travelled artist and he painted throughout Europe. He is represented in many public collections.
Provenance. Exhibited: Royal Society of British Artists 1891.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 30 inches by 20 inches unframed and in good condition.
Housed in a fine Barbizon gilt gallery frame, 40 inches by 30 inches framed. Gallery condition.
George Sherwood Hunter (1846-1914) - was born in Aberdeen in Scortland on 30 May 1846. He first visited Newlyn in the 1890s, staying at Belle View in 1897. In 1902 he settled at the Malt House, Newlyn, with his wife Constance. Hunter had a studio in Bateman’s Meadow, where the Forbes School of Painting was situated, and Hunter assisted with tuition at the School in its early days. Born in England, Birch started as a landscape painter but after the War of 1812 he turned to marine subjects, taking inspiration from the best of both English and Dutch maritime traditions but refining these techniques into a very recognizable style all his own.
The work featured here is a classic of Birch's later period, when he focused specifically on maritime subjects, mainly the busy waterways of Philadelphia Harbor. Here we see one of those scenes- a series of ships plying their trade, all framed by the city as it sits across the Delaware River, with the tall, white spire of what is either Independence Hall or Christ Church to the left of the main vessel. The details of the city are particularly good in this painting, with the wharf building to the left and the long line of buildings all along the shore.
The American Merchant Bark at the center of this painting is rendered in excellent detail, from her house flag and pennant, to her rigging and sails, and down to her deck filled with the activity of crewmembers readying the ship to head out, her gilt billet...
