About the Item

Peter Durieux Terraces 33 x 23 cm (Framed, included in price 42 x 32 cm) The work of Durieux is characterized by serene French landscapes. In recent years, he has also created work in and about the Netherlands. For example, he drew in the Brabant town of Heeze on the Strabrechtse Heide, and we see many depictions of the Groningen landscape. Those who know the artist are aware that his plein-air drawings are the foundation of the paintings he creates. These drawings, made in the landscape, are an important part of the oeuvre of the Groningen artist. The 'plein-air draughtsman' spends several mornings or afternoons per drawing at the same spot. Drawing, he captures how the light reveals the landscape. It is important for Durieux that the light is the same as the day before, which is why the artist chooses to work at the same times of day in the same location. The tonal landscapes display a stillness and intimacy that is unparalleled. At home in his studio, 'he dreams himself back to the place where he drew,' and with the drawing on paper as a tool, he creates his paintings on panel. Each painting takes you back to the many hours the artist spent in the landscape, capturing what he wanted to convey.

Muskokan

My painting is an inquiry. I make images as a way of responding to experiences that are important to me. Experiences that help me to understand why I’m in this world often happens when I am outside in large open spaces. Painted images act as a tool. I respond to the spaces my art suggests. That response is usually non-verbal. I am interested in the experience of non-duality that “getting lost” in big spaces can sometimes produce for me. The paintings have gone through a range of artistic treatments with the recent years seeing a focus on space, light, textures, atmosphere and distance. My landscape paintings are made from memory, not from on-site drawings or photographs. I use memory as a filtering agent to remove non-essential visual elements. When a work is successful, it must have a sense of poetry. There is nothing “new...
