About the Item
Italian fishermen in their boats at dusk and a quiet sea.
Oil on canvas, Mounted in a gilttwood frame. 74 × 131 cm
Signed and dated P. Gabrini Roma 1905
This evocative painting by Pietro Gabrini (1856–1926) captures a timeless Mediterranean moment: fishermen drifting on a calm, dusky sea, their small boats silhouetted against a soft evening sky. The palette is subdued yet warm, with gentle lavender and gold hues reflecting off the tranquil waters. Through relaxed, fluid brushwork, Gabrini immortalizes the fishermen's silent labor within a peaceful landscape.
Gabrini was born and based in Rome. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti under the renowned Domenico Morelli and also studied with Guglielmo de Sanctis
He was known for his mastery of light and colour across landscapes, genre scenes, still lifes and portraiture. Initially focused on historical painting, he later turned to capturing everyday life and the Roman countryside
In 1883, Gabrini won a silver medal at the prestigious Esposizione di Belle Arti in Rome. Throughout his career, he exhibited widely—not only in Italy but also in Germany, France, and the United States—including at acclaimed venues such as the Childs Gallery in Boston. He earned high honours on the international stage, notably receiving the Grand Medal at the Chicago World's Fair .
Gabrini’s works are held in several important collections, including the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome and the Museo Civico di Castelnuovo Berardenga
In 2020, a major retrospective at Palazzo Braschi, Rome, celebrated his artistic achievements and reaffirmed his status as a significant Italian painter of late‑19th/early‑20th century
This work, dated 1905 and clearly signed by the artist in Rome, fits squarely within Gabrini’s mature period—an era when he focused on intimate, naturalistic scenes with warm atmospheres and strong compositional harmony. The substantial size reinforces its impact, larger than many of his more intimate watercolours.
In summary, this serene dusk scene of Italian fishermen offers a characteristic example of Gabrini’s talent for capturing light, mood, and the quiet dignity of rural life. It stands as a testament to his broader oeuvre, exhibited internationally and preserved in major public collections.
