About the Item
In this painting, Robert Richter depicts a view over the top of a suburban fence, peeking into the backyard of a neighbor. Over the rounded wooden pickets are thickets of trees in a Midwestern backyard. The artist purposefully challenges the figure-ground relationship in the painting: the edges of each of the trees blur one into another, confusing which are in the foreground and background. To the far right, the walls of the house for which the painting is titled peek out from the edge of the image. The ambiguity and the playful decentering in the composition privileges faint memory over direct observation, and is part of Richter's working process.

Born in Milwaukee, Robert Richter has been painting from the age of eight. His unique paintings are hand carved on wood as well as hand carved frames that become an integral part of the paintings. The artist comments, “I want my paintings to be stunning from across the room, to beckon, as all good paintings should. And then close up, what a surprise!” The artist lived in New York where he painted literally everything from stage sets to mural commissions. He painted store front windows, lithographs from aluminum plates for actors, T-shirts, costumes, curtains, wall hangings, furniture and floors. His unique experiences, intellect, extraordinary color sensibility result in a stunning style with flavors of Avery, Grant Wood and Matisse, but mostly himself.
