Robert Richter
"First Snow, " Framed Winter Landscape Oil on Wood, Signed

2008

About the Item

In this painting, Robert Richter depicts a view of a hill in winter, with a tree and craggy rocks in the immediate foreground in high contrast to the grey-white of the recent snowfall. Using flat fields of color and by using the edge of the image to crop the dark tree, Richter's composition recalls Japanese woodblock prints. This is particularly fitting given the relationship between the traditional carving techniques for woodcut print blocks and the carving of the present artwork. At the same time, because of this Japonisme, the painting likewise resembles the images that Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen captured of the Flatiron building in New York at the beginning of the twentieth century. Richter's technique of carving his designs into the wood panel support leaves the subject appearing even more like a memory than these Pictorialist photographs. 48 x 36 inches, painting 55 x 43 inches, frame Titled, dated, signed in pencil & stamped with initial on verso Housed in a frame of the artist's design and construction Born in Milwaukee, Robert Richter has been painting from the age of 8. His unique paintings are hand carved on wood as well as hand carved frames that become an integral part of the paintings. The artist comments, “I want my paintings to be stunning from across the room, to beckon, as all good paintings should. And then close up, what a surprise!” The artist lived in New York where he painted literally everything from stage sets to mural commissions. He painted store front windows, lithographs from aluminum plates for actors, T-shirts, costumes, curtains, wall hangings, furniture and floors. His unique experiences, intellect, extraordinary color sensibility result in a stunning style with flavors of Avery, Grant Wood and Matisse, but mostly himself.

Japan Japanese Garden by French naive outsider folk art primitive artist, 1975
Located in Norwich, GB
A perfect painting for lovers of Japan and those of primitive/naive outside art. It is a work by an internatoanlly noted extraordinary artist with an extraordinary life. Maurice LOIRAND (1922-2008) is born into a working class family in Brittany, near the Atlantic coast coast in France. He starts working as a skilled labourer in the shipyards aged 15. Aged 20, when the Nazis start to occupy the country, he joins the Resistance movement, where he meets and befriends thinkers, painters and poets. He is thus introduced to an artistic and intellectual universe far removed from the world of his origins. Loirand finds himself drawn to art, and soon dedicates all his free time to learn how to paint. Completely self taught, he soon begins to exhibit his pictures alongside high level artists. He moves to Paris in the 1950s, and - although still working as a technician - paints all night. He finally becomes a full time artist in 1968. International travel and a multitude of exhibitions follow. He exhibits in Brazil, Argentina, and with Jean Tiroche Gallery in New York, among others. His work is now shown alongside works by Leger, Matisse and Picasso. The Collector's Guild New York Ltd commissions Maurice Loirand for several works of lithographic art. Loirand discovers Japan in the early 1970s, and decides to stay for 18 years. He marries Kazué SHIMOTORI, a Japanese poet...
