About the artist:
A lifelong resident of upstate New York, Cathy Diefendorf began her career as a freelance illustrator after graduating from Syracuse University with a BFA in Illustration and Painting. Working as an illustrator allowed her great flexibility as an artist. Throughout most of her career Diefendorf was represented by one of the largest illustration reps in the country, Mendola, LTD of Manhattan. For many years, Diefendorf enjoyed working on a constant and varied stream of projects commissioned by commercial clientele which included corporate murals, magazine and children’s book illustrations, product advertising such as wine labels, pharma, gameboards, tissue boxes and on and on. After nearly twenty-five rewarding years in the illustration field, Cathy decided to make a change and began to focus her professional efforts exclusively on producing fine art pieces. “It was time to paint from the heart.” Now, Cathy paints what she loves for galleries and private commissions. A student of Dutch marine artist, Mauritz de Haas, Warren Sheppard built two successful careers around his love of the sea: marine painting and yacht designing. He was born in Greenwich, New Jersey, a town on the Delaware River below Philadelphia, which has been associated with ships and shipping since the earliest Colonial times. His father was a sea captain and the young Sheppard took many voyages with his father to make artistic studies. He learned perspective drawing at Cooper Union in New York City in addition to his studies with de Haas. In 1879, he spent four months sketching Mediterranean port cities including Gibraltar, Genoa, Naples and Messina in Sicily. Between 1888 and 1893, he also studied painting in Venice and Paris. By the time he was in his mid-thirties, he had established himself as a successful illustrator and painter. The yachts he painted were the most lavish of his day, owned by the wealthiest of men. He was an expert in the design and rigging of ships of present and earlier times. His work was highly regarded for its authenticity as well as its artistic merit.Sheppard was also an expert navigator and sailed a number of famous yachts in races. Twice he was to command Tamerlane when it won the New York to Bermuda run. His book, Practical Navigation, was used for many years by the United States Naval Academy...

In this painting we can we Blackfriars Bridge in the background reaching across the River Thames with smoke billowing up into the sky behind. On the far right the unmistakable, and instantly recognisable, silhouette of St Pauls also breaks the sky line of the city. Finished in the early 18th Century, St Pauls has been a noticeable addition to the London cityscape ever since.
This work by Wilkinson depicts 'The Pool' of London, a stretch of the River Thames from London Bridge to below Limehouse. As part of the Tideway of the Thames, the Pool was navigable by tall-masted vessels bringing coastal and oversea goods to the wharves that originally made up the Port of London. In 1909 the Pool came under the jurisdiction of the Port of London Authority. The docks here thrived until the late 1950s, despite suffering from extreme bomb damage during the Second World War.
The tall-masted ships that Wilkinson has depicted here are perfect examples of traditionally rigged sailing craft of the time. They differ from modern sailing vessels in that they did not use newer materials (such as aluminium and steel) and have more complex rigging as a result. The term tall ship later came into widespread use in the mid-20th century with the advent of Tall Ships' races.
