La scena raffigurata è presa dal capitolo 20 del vangelo apocrifo dello Pseudo Matteo e raffigura un evento avvenuto durante la fuga in Egitto. Maria, stanca, chiede a Giuseppe di raccoglierle dei datteri da una palma, attività nel quale egli non riesce in quanto posti troppo in alto. Interviene quindi Gesù che chiede alla palma di inchinarsi. L'episodio, già di per sé raro, rappresenta una variante: sono infatti due angioletti ad intercedere fra la palma e la sacra famiglia, a specificare un percorso ideale fra l'esperizna terrena e l'ordine divino. Dal punto di vista artistico il dipinto presenta evidenti affinità con lo stile dell'italia centrale e mostra chiare influenze dell'ambiente romano. Non mancano poi i rimandi perugineschi, specialmente nelle fisionomie e nell'impianto della luce che rimanda ad atmosfere rinascimentali, permettendoci quindi di riconoscere la mano di Tommaso Minardi. Il pittore, nato a Faenza, studiò a Roma e fu per lungo tempo il direttore dell'Accademia di Perugia. La freschezza della composizione e la struttura delle forme neoclassica, l'attenzione dedicata al momento del disegno si abbinano perfettamente agli ideali del purismo, di cui l'artista firmò il manifesto nel 1843.
