An expressive mid-century modernist style coastal landscape painting, executed in oil onto board and dated 1957.
The composition presents a black boat resting on a sandy shore, its deep shadow cast onto the beach. The background features a textured seascape, with rolling waves in various shades of blue and green crashing against the shore, while a pale blue sky stretches across the horizon. The foreground includes tufts of dune grass rendered in soft greens.
The colour palette is dominated by deep blues, greens, and sandy earth tones, with the stark black of the boat providing a dramatic focal point.
The artist has used a bold and expressive style – confidently executing visible brushstrokes that add texture and dynamism, particularly in the depiction of the waves, which are layered with impasto strokes of white and dark blue to capture their motion and energy.
This oil on board is set in a complementary silver frame. There are some very minor surface marks to painting but these do not detract from its overall appearance. The frame has some scuffs and paint loss.
