About the Item
Amazing work of art , “Rocks from the Balcony” presents itself as an exquisite window to the sea, a coastal landscape by French painter Henri Brun-Marin. The balcony from which this painting was made, as reflected in the back, is located in Cap d’Antibes, a small peninsula located between Cannes and Nice, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. It is a privileged setting overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
The scene captures a moment of nature with the sole purpose of conveying the visual and sensorial experience of the place, as well as a sense of calm, to which the horizontal composition contributes. The sea occupies almost two-thirds of the plane, providing a sense of spaciousness and serenity. The brushstroke is loose, energetic, and visible. This short, material brushstroke creates a striking texture, emphasizing its volume and roughness in the area of the rocks and appearing more fluid in the sea, simulating the movement of the waters.
The color palette is naturalistic. Various shades of blue predominate for the sea, from deep shadows to lighter turquoises. The rocks display a mixture of ochres, earth tones, and warm whites, bathed in sunlight. The light, in fact, resembles that of dusk or midday, due to the marked contrasts between light and shadow and the warm atmosphere. The artist's handling of light and color demonstrates great skill.
