About the Item
This captivating early 19th century antique oil painting presents a beautifully executed pastoral scene by an unknown but undoubtedly professional English master - signed lower left with an illegible signature, possibly “C. Hall” or “G. Hall”. The focus is a village stone cottage with a turf covered roof. The cottage is cozily situated along the road between rocky boulders and a dense forest with centuries old oaks. A solitary figure of a traveler in the foreground adds narrative to the scene. The classically constructed composition, in the Romantic style, draws the viewer’s eye with a masterfully rendered perspective that recedes into a foothill valley set among high mountains, which dissolve into atmospheric haze on the horizon, creating remarkable depth. The warm overall palette and the emphasis on the orange foliage of the approaching autumn, combined with an exquisite play of light and shadow, demonstrate the artist’s mastery. This antique oil on canvas is a vivid example of early 19th-century traditional European landscape painting, when artists sought to convey both the seclusion and the beauty of the countryside. There losses of the paint layer and retouches (see photos), craquelure, and old varnish hiding all the halftones that is subject to cleaning and further conservation. The frame shows wear. Please study good resolution images for cosmetic condition. In person actual painting may appear darker or brighter than in our pictures, strictly depending on sufficient light in your environment. Weight of app. 2 kg is going to measure 3-4 kg packed for shipment.
