Santa Maria della Salute, Venice - Italian Landscape with Gondola

2000

About the Item

Beautiful figurative landscape of Basilica Santa Maria della Salute in Venice, Italy with a gondola in the foreground by an unknown artist (Italian, 20th Century). Signed indistinctly lower right. Description on verso with indistinct signature, title, "Santa Maria della Salute, Venezia", and date 2000. Displayed with white and light pink double mat and dusty rose metal frame. Image size: 4.5" H x 6.5" W. Santa Maria della Salute is a Roman Catholic basilica located at Punta della Dogana in the Dorsoduro sestiere of the city of Venice, Italy. In 1630, Venice experienced an unusually devastating outbreak of the plague. As a votive offering for the city's deliverance from the pestilence, the Republic of Venice vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or of Deliverance, Italian: Salute). The church was designed in the then fashionable baroque style by Baldassare Longhena, who studied under the architect Vincenzo Scamozzi. Construction began in 1631. Most of the objects of art housed in the church bear references to the Black Death.
