About the Item

Painter, art teacher Valters Uzticis was born on 19 July 1914 in Daugavpils into a family of labourers. From 1932 to 1936 he studied at the Liepāja Art Secondary School. In 1943 he graduated from the master workshop of figurative painting of Professor Ludolfs Liberts at the Art Academy of Latvia. From 1933 to 1936 he was a scenery painter at the Liepāja Theatre, a decorator at the Labour Museum in Riga (1937-1938), illustrated books (1940-1941), freelance artist at book publishing houses in the Latvian SSR (1946-1959). At the end of World War II, war correspondent in the German army. After filtration, artist at the Talsi Museum (1945-1950), teacher at the Kuldīga Secondary School of Fine Arts (1950-1952; dissolved in 1952). Head of the decorative design department at Liepāja Art High School (1952-1989), also stage designer at Liepāja Theatre (1962-1967). After his death, a significant part of his creative legacy was transferred to the Liepāja Museum. Included in the selection of the newspaper "Kurzemes Vārds" "The most outstanding Liepāja artists of the 20th century". The newspaper "Kurzemes Vārds" said: "Daugavpils resident who spent most of his 77 years of life in Liepāja. At the age of 22 he graduated from the Liepaja Fine Arts High School and in 1943 he graduated from the Art Academy, where he studied under Latvian masters A. Annus, V. Tone and L. Liberts. While still studying in Liepāja, he took part in exhibitions and worked in the Liepāja Theatre as a scenery painter. In the mid-1930s he twice won prizes of the Latvian Art Promotion Society. From 1952 he was a teacher at Liepāja Art High School. He is better known for his oil paintings, but he also worked extensively and interestingly in watercolour. In 1994, the Liepaja Museum held a memorial exhibition of almost 70 of his watercolours. Uztičs' warm, Latvian-style love of the nature and small towns of Lower Kurzeme."
