About the Item
Picturesque scene of two children by a thatched cottage, pasture with sheep, pond and hills is signed W. Williams, attributed to a prominent 19th century artist in a family of British artists. Walter Williams is one of the best known of the family. This is a fine oil on canvas original painting.
Walter Heath Williams (1834-1906) was born into a family of landscape artists. He flourished during the Victorian period, exhibiting in the Royal Academy and the British Institute.
This simple cottage scene, titled 'Children At Play' presents an idyllic rural scene in summer, with soft light on the pond, green rolling pastures with a flock of sheep and figures of a boy and girl on the dirt path leading to the charming cottage.
This painting is within his genre of painting, recognizable by the brushstrokes in the leaves on the trees.
The painting is 21.5" high in the simple frame, and 29.5" wide. Saltire Gallerie has undertaken a light cleaning. The pale blues and white clouds in the sky have visible but stable craquelure with no paint flecks. No other fault is noted.
Presented in stable and good overall condition, this vintage Victorian painting is ready to hang.

Walter Williams
Walter Williams was one of the four sons of Edward Williams. On 2 June 1857, Walter Williams married Jane Pearcy at St George’s, Hanover Square, not then a very salubrious district. His wife was the daughter of William Pearcy, a glass dealer, who was related to Clara Boddington. Jane and Walter lived in apparently comfortable circumstances at 8 Londsdale Terrace, Barnes. Walter Williams was a landscape painter working mainly in Wales but also in England. He was a member of the Williams family of painters and was the son of George Augustus Williams. He exhibited mainly at Suffolk Street, also at the Royal Academy between 1854 and 1880 as well as at the British Institution. Williams exhibited thirty-two paintings at the Royal Hibernian Academy and also at the Royal Society of British Artists, Manchester City Art Gallery and the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham.

Signed lower right "Nasmyth" leading to one of the whole pleiad of renowned Scottish artists starting with Alexander Nasmyth (1758 -1840). This painting showcases a scene of a landscape with shallow water, where a family is seen wading through a river ford in knee-deep water. The presence of a shepherdess on a high bank, observing the travelers with keen interest, adds a sense of pastoral charm to the composition. One of the focal points of the painting is a picturesque tree that has fallen into the river, adding a touch of drama to the overall scene. The contrast between the lush woodland and bushes on the right side of the foreground and the rolling valley on the left side further enhances the depth and perspective of the painting and superbly illustrates the traditions of the early 19th century British Art...
