View of the city of Dordrecht Oil on wooden panel, 59 x 84 cm, signed and dated WD 1667 and with the inscription Dort (= Dordrecht in spoken language). Willem van Drillenburg (also spelled van Drielenburgh) was active in Holland during the so-called golden age of Dutch painting. He was born in Utrecht, where he began his artistic education with the history and landscape painter Abraham Bloemaert (1566-1651). He worked in a style that was strongly influenced by the Italian baroque master Caravaggio, and those among Bloemaert’s students who engaged in genre and history painting have therefore come to be known as the “Utrecht Caravaggisti”. In the case of van Drillenburg, who early on specialized in landscape, this influence is not as obvious. Greater similarities can instead be found with colleague Jan Both (ca. 1610-1652), who was also a student of Bloemaert and later furthered his education in Rome, but who also visited France and for a time worked side by side with Claude Lorrain. In his landscape painting, Jan Both combined the French and Italian components that also coexist so nicely in the current painting by van Drillenburg - View of the city of Dordrecht. Dordrecht is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands and is surrounded by four rivers, among them the historically important trade route Meuse (Maas). In addition to its function as a trading city, Dordrecht soon became a seat of learning. In 1253, the Latin school was founded there, which today is the oldest high school in the Netherlands. During the 16th century, the city also gained great political importance for the resistance movement against the Spanish Habsburg Empire. In 1572, the important meeting that went down in history as the Union in Dordrecht was held there, when William of Orange was formally elected leader of the opposition. William of Orange is considered the founder of the Dutch monarchy and the ancestor of the country’s current royal family. In 1668 van Drillenburg moved to Dordrecht, where he lived until his death. He had his own studio and eventually got his own students; among others Wilhelmus Beurs and Arnold Houbraken. The latter came to publish a book in 1718, De groote schouburgh der Nederlantsche konstschilders en schilderessen, which has gained great importance for research on Dutch golden age painting. In his View of the City of Dordrecht, van Drillenburg depicts, among other things, the lively boat traffic around the city, it’s now demolished city walls and two of its formerly important windmills. In the centre, however, is the main church, Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe-Kerk (colloquially known as Grote kerk, The Great Church) with its mighty bell tower. The tower holds a full 67 bells, of which the largest weighs almost ten tons. That makes it the heaviest bell in the whole country. A companion piece to View of the City of Dordrecht, with identical format and made in the same material and on the same surface but depicting the artist’s birthplace, was sold in 1971 through Åmells to Centraal Museum Utrecht. There it is today included in the permanent collections with the title Gefantaseerd gezicht op de stad Utrecht (inv no 17302).
