About the Item

Tintern Abbey, Monmouthshire Wales - Impressionist Oil on Canvas, Signed and Framed in Impressionist style Frame 16 by 20 inches (Framed size 22 by 26 inches) £2500 I really love this painting, such a lovely composition, wonderful broody Welsh skies and the paint is thickly applied with lots of impasto, it is a muted palette but really sings. Tintern Abbey was founded in 1131 by Walter de Clare, Lord of Chepstow. It is on the English and Welsh border but on the Welsh bank of the River Wye. The abbey fell into ruin after the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th Century, its remains have been celebrated in poetry and painting from the 18th Century onwards. The ruins have been painted by numerous artists, notable amongst these have been Gainsborough and JMW Turner whose series of paintings now resides in the Tate and the British Museum. William Henry David Birch R.O.I. 1895 - 1968 Known as David Birch, he was a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Birch was a Landscape painter in oil, portrait painter and illustrator. He studied at Epsom School of Art and Goldsmiths’ College School of Art. He became principal of Epsom and Ewell School of Art, 1930–61. He exhibited at the RA, ROI, RBA and Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and his work was widely reproduced, notably by Royle Publications. Brighton Museum and Art Gallery and several other provincial galleries hold his work. Lived at Epsom, Surrey.
