About the Item

Period impressionist painting, 'titled Driving Cattle' is by Scottish 19th century artist William Mouncey (1852-1901). His particular style is evident in this painting of a Scottish woodland in thick swirls of paint in the sky and outlines of color on the trees in red, ochre and autumnal colors. Cattle and a figure appear in the woodland, beside the tall trees that dominate the scene. Oil on board. Mouncey was born in Kirkcudbright, southern Scotland, and founded the Kirkcudbright Artist's Colony. His work embraced the impressionism of his time. Mouncey exhibited with the Royal Scottish Academy, but also in London, Philadelphia Carnegie Institute and in Dresden, Germany. 'Cattle Driving' is in a newer good wooden frame with art glass. On the back of the frame is a tag from Aitken and Dott, well known art framers dating to 1842. In excellent condition, no issues noted. The frame has minor imperfections, but needs no restorative work. About 22" high and 17.5" wide in the frame.

George Boyle Impressionist oil painting, Barbizon School of sheep grazing
Located in Harkstead, GB
A wonderful example of a Barbizon inspired landscape painted by the "Catford Corot" from the late 19th Century. This picturesque view has the typical Barbizon elements with a shepherdess and her flock at the edge of a forest. Beautifully presented in a good quality hardwood frame - a very atmospheric piece in ready to hang condition. George Boyle (1842-1930) A shepherdess and her flock at the edge of a forest Signed Oil on canvas 15 x 18 inches without the frame 22 x 25 inches with the frame George Boyle is perhaps the best known English painter inspired by the Barbizon School. In fact he is known as the "Catford Corot" as his paintings have such a close resemblance to the school's main exponent, Jean Baptiste Camille Corot.
