William Mouncey
Kirkcudbright - Scottish 19th century art Impressionist landscape oil painting

Circa 1898

About the Item

A gallery painting of the highest quality and in stunning original condition. This is a super Scottish impressionistic oil on canvas painting of Kirkcudbright. This painting depicts the Scottish town in a glimmering early morning light and was painted circa 1898. This is a fine example of a 19th century Scottish Impressionist oil painting, and the subject matter makes this a particularly appealing painting. It is a good size, signed and in remarkable condition. This wouldn't be out of place in Kelvingrove Gallery in Glasgow. If you want a painting by this artist, then this is as good as it gets. Signed lower right. Provenance. Private collection. Condition. Oil on canvas. Image size 24 inches by 14 inches and in very good original condition. Frame. Original ebonized 19th century frame 30 inches by 22 inches. Excellent original condition behind original glass. William Mouncey (1852-1901). Mouncey was born in Kirkcudbright and worked as a house painter and decorator before becoming a full-time landscape artist. He spent most of his life at Kirkcudbright, much influenced by his friend, E.A. Hornel, whose sister he married. Devoted to his native countryside, he represented it in warm and mellow colours and used the impasto technique to apply the paint. Mouncey exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy and at The Glasgow Institute and benefited from the patronage of dealers James Connell & Sons, Glasgow.

Jules Van Biesbroeck was the son of Jules Evariste van Biesbroeck, a painter of Ghent, but was born in Italy, in Portici, near Naples, while his parents were staying there. (In the 19th century many artists made educational trips to Italy). It was a long visit: the child was two years old by the time the family returned to Ghent.[1] After a short period of practice with his father, van Biesbroeck was enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. His first painting, "The Shepherd" (French: Le pâtre), was sold at the Triennale in Ghent. In 1888, when he was only 15 years old, he made his debut at the "Salon des Champs-Elysées" in Paris with his monumental work "The Launch of the Argo" (French: Le lancement...

In this prototypical oil painting, Walter Launt Palmer's title as "the painter of the American winter" can be vividly and brilliantly seen. As an impressionist painter that emerged at the turn of the 20th century, Palmer took great interest in the picturesque American landscape, though he particularly focused on the rendering of this landscape glistening with snow. His pictures evoke an unreplicable natural serenity, and in this oil painting "The Winter Scene...
