Phillip received a BFA degree in painting from the Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City, Missouri in 1972. Studied two years under painting department chairman, Wilbur Niewald. While attending school in Kansas City he became intrigued with the impressionist school of painting and their use of nature as a source of information for their work. Using the infinite variations of nature in the still life, figure and landscape, the artist is presented with limitless subject matter. Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro and other painters of nature were earlier influences on Phillip's work. Dealing with ever-changing elements of nature, movement of light and shadow in the landscape, field workers finishing their tasks, Phillip adopted a broken color style of applying paint to his canvas. This approach allowed the image on the canvas to be developed quickly, and all at one time.
Phillip has lived and painted in the Northwest since 1989. His long desire to paint the subject matter of the impressionists painters and his belief that beautiful subject matter increases the probability of painting beautiful paintings, inspired two painting trips to Mexico and ten trips to Europe. In April of 2007, April of 2008 and again in 2014, a rented boat on the Canal du Midi, France served as a form of transportation, a floating studio and hotel. In the 1950s, Kenneth Bonar Walsh came to Montauk from New York City to paint seascapes, catch fish, sing of Nature's beauty, put down roots, and, later, develop a style of painting all his own.
The Boston native moved to New York after attending the School of Practical Art on the G.I. Bill, where he began his career in the art department of Lever Brothers. But he had bigger dreams, and soon established the Bonart Studio, a commercial art business. RCA Records, the Ideal and Transogram toy companies, and the Schrafft’s candy and chocolate company were among the studio’s clients.

Emil Ganso
1885-1941
Ganso was born in Germany in 1895. At age 14, he apprenticed to a baker and then worked his way to America when he was 17. He worked in bakeries in Scranton, Pennsylvania; and Cincinnati and Akron, Ohio. By 1916, Ganso was out of a job, and living the life of a bohemian in New York City, sometimes on less than 30 cents a week.
In 1921, Ganso painted on a realistic nude on a bedsheet and was forced by the police to remove it from an exhibition. The bedsheet with the painting was later stolen. He soon had a job baking again at $140 a month, and with time to spare for painting and study. Ganso quit baking in 1925 when a New York dealer game him financial backing of $50 a week. Ganso has prospered from his art ever since.
His work is in over 15 American museums, and the Print Club of Cleveland awarded him a $500 purchase prize for a wood engraving. A versatile artist, he paints a variety of subjects.
