Giea, Oil Painting Realism, Alla Prima, History Flows Into the Present, Figures
Located in Houston, TX
Look for free shipping when checking out. If not gallery will pay shipping in Continental USA. Gallery Wrapped. Giea reexamines portraits of individuals throughout history to illustrate the premise that history flows into the present in an ever-changing state. And, with each new context, we view people and events through a contemporary lens specific to that moment. Giea appropriates and contextualizes original portrait elements to create reinvented portraits using technique and patterning that brings a contemporary context and perspective to these historically inspired portraits. My current body of work, Contemporary Histories, explores this phenomena by re-interpreting historical portraiture using a contemporary visual language. It is my intent to create a modern visual lens through which to view these individuals and their legacies, as they continue to flow into the present in ever-changing states. As a keen example of how history changes and morphs over time, I have selected portraits of women who chose an alternate path from the traditional ones prescribed in their times. Some of these individuals overtly stepped outside the traditional roles prescribed for women to realize their goals. Others astutely maneuvered within the social system they lived in to obtain their aspirations. Whether altruistic or nefarious, these women and their actions altered the future cultural landscape. Through a 21st century lens, we view them as women with minds of their own, who made choices to control their own lives and futures. Often, in stark contrast to how they were viewed and how their actions were recorded in their own times. For a modern visual language, a combination of fine and decorative arts has inspired my approach to this subject. Employing several formal contemporary tenets, most notably, rather than place the figure in a 3-dimensional space, as in the originals, the figures reside in flat graphic picture planes of damask designs, repetitive patterns or botanical grounds as modern settings for their modern legacies. These graphic backgrounds symbolize what was historically considered a woman’s proper domain, in particular, gardening and needle crafts, such as; quilting, embroidery and sewing. Formally, unlike the originals, I am working alla prima, rather than with a base grisaille and delicate layers of glazing. While, the patterned and botanical environments, along with gold leaf applications, contemporary compositions and color palettes are formally influenced by a spectrum of 19th - 21st century artists and artisans; from Gustav Klimt and the Wiener Werkstatte to Henri Rousseau, Tamara de Lempicka and Will Cotton. "You'll Never Know" Mixed Media Figurative Collage Composition on Panel Board
Located in New York, NY
This piece depicts a colorful collage composition portrait of Marilyn Monroe, as Jon Davenport explores the process of deconstructing iconic imagery from the past and present. Davenport start’s out with photos of his paint-stained studio floor and collages in articles/advertising from an array of vintage magazines collected over the years; plus any other interesting stuff captured on his travels. He then transfers the images to a panel board, layering them on with gel medium, together with strokes, splashes, drips, and splats of paint. Once it's dry, another layer of gel medium is poured on to give it a melting effect. After it drys off again, another layer of paint is added to embellish a few areas and to accentuate or fade out certain aspects. And then, he finally adds a coat of polyurethane for protection and making the colors pop. This unique work is executed on a wood panel board and comes ready to be displayed with hanging wire on verso, signed by the artist lower right. Art measures 36 x 36 in From biology student to owning and running a creative agency in London to a career as a fine artist, life has taken Jon Davenport on a rewarding and unconventional journey. Despite his scientific beginnings, he’s always had a strong artistic streak weaving its way through his different career paths. Growing up in Ipswich, UK, Jon was always an avid drawer, and could often be found with a pencil and paper in hand. With the arrival of his first computer, he embraced the new frontier of digital art and had work published in one of those early computer magazines. His creative urges took a backseat to get a biology degree at Brunel University in London. It was afterward, in his first job working at the Archant newspaper group in Ipswich, that he quickly progressed from plate maker to becoming an integral member of the art studio. It was during this time that he taught himself photoshop, desktop publishing, and graphic & web design. After a few years, he set up a design agency, and eventually went full time and moved to London. This proved to be a successful move, working for a number of clients such as Nike and Virgin, and gaining praise from the likes of Richard Branson and Tony Blair. It wasn’t until Jon moved to the USA to marry his wife, Atlanta artist Christy Kinard...

'Meme Money 002: Goochi Sponge, ' by XVALA, Mixed Media Painting
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
In this mixed media 24"x24" painting, 'Meme Money 002: Goochi Sponge,' by XVALA, the artist colorfully plays with the 'Gucci' brand in tandem with the childhood cartoon series, SpongeBob. Spongebob, a 'Goochi Sponge' takes center stage with red dollar sign glasses in a palette of green, red, and gold on a lime green background. XVALA's art illuminates the hidden fallout spawned from our high tech Internet age. His 'Fear Google' campaign exposed the decay of privacy and 'No Delete' used hacked nude celebrity photos to highlight loss of control over personal information. The artist has worked with trash from the homes of Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, and others, as well as dirt from the graves of George Orwell and Aldous Huxley. The dirt appears in the New World Order collection as part of a pyramidal, 3D printed, living ant farm...

Located in FISTERRA, ES
This acrylic painting, part of Natasha Lelenco’s You Are the One series, features a vivid and surreal portrait of a central woman figure with a bright blue face, framed by sleek black hair, set against a luminous yellow background. The subject’s green lips add a bold contrast, drawing attention to the artwork’s vibrant color palette. Surrounding the figure, playful blue flowers and abstract shapes evoke an expressive, almost whimsical narrative, blending surrealist and naïve art styles. The canvas is characterized by its flat, saturated colors and dynamic floral patterns, which add depth and movement to the composition. Mary Dwyer, Nast vs. Boss Tweed, 1870s, 2013, Acrylic Paint, Wood Panel
Located in Darien, CT
Fascinated by American history, Mary Dwyer blends the American Folk Art tradition with an abstract modernist aesthetic. The inspiration of her work revolves around historic lore and love of early portraiture paintings. Drawn from extensive research sometimes found to be inexact and often contradictory, Mary’s work becomes her own personal interpretation of history. She creates series of paintings, which portray political, historic and personal details that shaped an historic figures life. Thomas Nast During the 19th century, the American newspaper had as much powerful influence as ‘social media’ has today. Many Americans at that time were not literate and received political and social information from the newspaper cartoon. This gave a cartoonist power. Political cartoonist, Thomas Nast used this power to bring down corruption in New York City. His main targets were William “BOSS” Tweed and his politically corrupt Tammany Hall. Nast frequently sharpened his pen to lampoon the newly arrived Irish catholic...

Cowboy Boots and Cell Phone, Oil Painting
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
I hope my work inspires you to rediscover the wonder and joy in the everyday. This contemporary figurative painting was inspired by the view from my hotel balcony of the pedestrians walking below me. Using my signature Pixel Impressionist brush strokes, I created the motion of the walking figure and my passion for the subject.

About the Artist
Warren Keating's paintings start with documentation. He captures subjects on video from birds-eye views, digitizes the film on his computer and, finally, paints them on canvas in an active style he describes as Pixel Impressionism. He merges artistic elements of the 20th Century with 21st Century technology. Warren credits Futurism as well as Richard Diebenkorn and Willem de Kooning as influences in his paintings. Fun fact: Warren’s inspiration for this series came from a vacation to Paris where he photographed passersby from his hotel balcony in Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

Words that describe this painting: aerial view, contemporary, figurative art, Impressionistic figure, people in motion, mobile phone, cowboy boots, walking, people, man, urban portrait, Paris, Gerhard Richter, impressionism, people, fashion, representational, oil painting, grey, blue, yellow
