About the Item

Cubist acrylic and oil on board in the modern form of a stylised mannequin figure portrait by French artist Créqule. The painting is influenced by the paintings of Giorgio de Chirico. Signed bottom right. The painting is presented in a patinated wood frame under glass. This artwork presents a striking abstract figure, masterfully rendered in geometric forms and muted earth tones. The central figure is depicted with a head resembling a mannequin bust, devoid of facial features, evoking a sense of anonymity and universality. Intriguing angular shapes form the torso and limbs, suggesting a fusion of human and mechanical elements. The background consists of layered planes of colour, including deep greens, blues, and earthy tones, which create depth and contrast against the figure’s form. A thin outline around the figure suggests movement or transformation, lending dynamism to the composition. Crequle employs a sophisticated balance of colour and form to invoke curiosity and contemplation. This work stands out for its unique blend of abstract figurative elements and its capacity to convey a narrative of identity and modernity, all within a thoughtfully composed space. Very modern in style, the way the colours are patchworked is reminiscent of the harlequin pattern, a theme which was made very prominent by artists such as Picasso and André l'Hôte. The distinct fields of colour also hark back to the colour field style employed by Nicolas de Staël. All these elements give us the impression of a picture painted in the 1950s ( mid-century ). Modern in style with elements of abstract geometric, this painting has it all. Créqule is a Provencal artist currently working in Saint Maxime on the Côte d'Azur just across the bay from St. Tropez. Giuseppe Maria Alberto Giorgio de Chirico was an Italian artist and writer born in Greece. In the years before World War I, he founded the scuola metafisica art movement, which profoundly influenced the surrealists. His best-known works often feature Roman arcades, long shadows, mannequins, trains, and illogical perspective. His imagery reflects his affinity for the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer and of Friedrich Nietzsche, and for the mythology of his birthplace. After 1919, he became a critic of modern art, studied traditional painting techniques, and later worked in a neoclassical or neo-Baroque style, while frequently revisiting the metaphysical themes of his earlier work. In 2018 it was suggested that de Chirico may have suffered from Alice in Wonderland syndrome.
