Portrait of Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone
Oil on canvas
This exceptional portrait captures the stately likeness of the famed “Grand Old Man” of British politics, Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone. Painted by one of the most important artists of the Victorian era, George Frederic Watts, this portrait of Gladstone captures the commanding presence of this legendary giant at a pivotal point in his long career.
This handsome portrait is the second that Watts made of Gladstone, the first being a striking 1859 portrayal of a younger Gladstone freshly embarking on his political career. It was later gifted directly to the National Portrait Gallery in 1898. Painted almost two decades later in 1876, our portrait depicts an aged and wisened Gladstone at the peak of his career. This portrait was rendered just a few years before his landslide 1800 win that earned him his second term as Prime Minister. Gladstone would remarkably ascend to serve four separate terms as Prime Minister— the most non-consecutive terms of any Prime Minister in British history.
Next to Watts’ earlier portrait, this Gladstone of the late 1870s commands the room with a shrewd expression of stately sagacity. His highly expressive likeness was notoriously difficult to capture in paint, though this did not prevent the immensely popular statesman from posing for countless portraits throughout his life. As the leader of his party for many decades, Gladstone inspired widespread popular devotion. Today, Gladstone’s portraits are in the collections of museums worldwide, including the British Museum and the Getty, with many residing in London’s National Portrait Gallery alone.
Gladstone and Watts found kinship during their portrait sitting, and their endless conversations ultimately delayed the completion of this portrait. Though Watts ceased working on the painting in 1880, he nonetheless fully captured Gladstone’s imposing likeness that stands as a testament to his indelible mark on British history. As an artist, George Frederic Watts was one of the most famous painters and sculptors of the Symbolist movement in Britain, receiving the Order of Merit from Queen Victoria in 1902. His works are in prestigious museum collections such as the Tate, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum, and many others.
Watts once said, “I paint ideas, not things,” a captivating concept that imbues this poignant portrait of Gladstone with the monumental weight of his transformative political career.

George Frederic Watts
George Frederic Watts OM, RA (1817 – 1904) was considered one of the greatest artists of the Victorian era, internationally renowned and celebrated in his own lifetime. He pursued an individual artistic approach and is remembered most for his large-scale symbolist paintings reflecting Victorian sensibilities and Hall of Fame portraits, capturing his distinguished contemporaries in Victorian society. In artistic terms he is significant not only because of the works he produced, but because of his determined innovation in developing an artistic practice which was not tied to a larger artistic movement. A portraitist, sculptor, landscape painter and symbolist, Watts's work embodied the most pressing themes and ideas of the time, earning him the title England's Michelangelo.

Sir Henry Bowles Howard, 12th Earl of Suffolk and 5th Earl of Berkshire
Oil on canvas
Sir Joshua Reynolds is unequivocally considered the most important English portraitist of the 18th century who was instrumental in adapting the Grand Manner style in the portrait genre. In fact, when the Royal Academy was founded in 1768, Reynolds was elected its first President, setting the precedent of quality for which all other portraitists would strive.
Reynolds's portrait of Henry Bowles Howard, 12th Earl of Suffolk, showcases his genius in the genre and mastery over the medium. Reynolds’s portrait of the Earl expertly invokes classical values with strong lighting, rich colors and expert attention to detail to help underscore the prominence and revered echelon of the sitter. Howard was an esteemed British politician and Knight of the Garter. He served as Secretary of State for the Northern Department from 1771 to 1779, and he played a key role in utilizing mercenaries during the American Revolution and safeguarding Sweden's independence.
The portrait employs Reynolds's signature style to render Howard rightfully as a gentleman of distinction. Captured seated in a stately library, the Earl appears learned and austere as he places one hand upon a stack of important documents and looks wistfully into the distance. Reynolds makes these compositional choices decisively, as the seated position gives Howard a weighty appearance of importance and the semi-profile turn captures his countenance at an attractive angle that highlights his strong, masculine features. The work draws on the classical conventions of Greek and Roman art and the Italian Renaissance masters, anchoring the nobleman in a history of refinement. Everything from his strong yet welcoming expression to his pale face enlivened by a rush of blood to the cheeks presents the picture of a strong, vital and powerful leader.
As the first president of the Royal Academy in London, Reynolds’s commissions raised the status of an artist in Britain during the Romantic period and also established the portrait as an esteemed high art genre that garnered equal import to the history paintings that reigned supreme in decades prior. Today, Reynolds’s works grace the walls of the most important museums in the world, including the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Gallery in London, among others.

Herbert William Fisher (1826 - 1903) was a British historian, best known for his 'Considerations on the Origin of the American War' (1865). Fisher was tutor to the future King Edward VII, and served as Private Secretary to the 5th Duke of Newcastle. in 1863 he became Private Secretary to the Prince of Wales, his former pupil, before being appointed to the position of Vice-Warden of the Stannaries in 1870. One of his daughters, Adeline, married Ralph Vaughan Williams.
George Frederick Watts
Watts (1817 - 1904) was a British painter and sculptor associated with the Symbolist movement. He is known to have said 'I paint ideas, not things'. Watts became famous in his lifetime for his allegorical works, such as 'Hope' and 'Love and Life' in which the emotions and aspiration life were intended to be represented in a universal symbolic language.
Watts was born in Marylebone in central London on the birthday of George Frederic Handel (after whom he was named), to the second wife of a poor piano-maker. He showed artistic promise very early, learning sculpture from the age of 10 with William Behnes, starting to study devotedly the Elgin Marbles (later writing "It was from them alone that I learned") and then enrolling as a student at the Royal Academy Schools at the age of 18.
He first exhibited at the Academy in 1837, with a picture of "The Wounded Heron" and two portraits, but his attendance at the Academy was short-lived, and his further art education was confined to personal experiment and endeavour, guided by a constant appeal to the standard of ancient Greek sculpture. He also began his portraiture career, receiving patronage from his close contemporary Alexander Constantine Ionides, who later came to be a close friend. In 1849 the first two of the allegorical compositions which form the most characteristic of the artist's productions were exhibited—"Life's Illusions," an elaborate presentment of the vanity of human desires, and "The people that sat in darkness," turning eagerly towards the growing dawn. In 1850 he first gave public expression to his intense longing to improve the condition of humanity in the picture of "The Good Samaritan" bending over the wounded traveller; this, as recorded in the catalogue of the Royal Academy, was "painted as an expression of the artist's admiration and respect for the noble philanthropy of Thomas Wright, of Manchester," and to that city he presented the work. From the late 1840s onward he painted many portraits in France and England, some of which are described below. Notable pictures of the same period are “Sir Galahad...
