Primarily known as a sculptor, Giorgio Rossi rarely produced paintings. In this work, he depicts a female figure reminiscent of a statuette, placed beside a large red vase. The composition deliberately plays on ambiguity: it is unclear whether we are looking at a real woman next to an oversized vessel, or at a small ceramic object transformed into a monumental presence.
The work has always remained in the artist's family home after his death.
The painting introduces naïve elements and a tone verging on the metaphysical, far from the realistic virtuosity of his drawings. This deliberate and paradoxical choice gives strength to the whole, making it a rare and original testimony within Rossi's pictorial output.
Brief biography of the artist
Giorgio Rossi, sculptor and painter, was active in Tuscany, between Florence and Volterra. He developed a personal language that combined 20th-century realism with archaic and Renaissance references, while remaining open to modern influences. He took part in important exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale in 1930 and 1936, and taught for more than thirty years at the Artistic and Industrial School of Volterra, specializing in terracotta and alabaster.
