About the Item

'Young Woman with a Violin' by Mogens Vantore. Paris, Cubism, Royal Danish Academy, Charlottenborg ---- Signed center left, 'M. Vantore' for Erik Mogens Christian Vantore (Danish, 1895-1977) and painted circa 1915. A dramatic, early twentieth-century, Cubist-derived figural oil of a young woman seated next to a violin and shown arranging music note-paper while engaging the viewer with a candid glance. Painterly and lyrical brushwork in all areas by this noted Danish Modernist. Born in Copenhagen in 1895, Mogens Vantore first studied with his father, the Impressionist, Hans Christian Hansen. He continued his studies at the Charlottenborg Art Academy, to which he was admitted at the unusually young age of 14. Vantore subsequently studied in Paris (1923-25) where he came under the influence of the Post-Impressionists, particularly Derain, Gauguin and the Nabis. Returning to Denmark, he continued to send successful exhibits to Paris while exhibiting annually, from 1922 to 1947, at Copenhagen's Charlottenborg Museum. In 1930, Vantore was awarded the Akademie scholarship which enabled him to live and paint while traveling throughout Europe for two years. Over the course of a long career, Vantore exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards and his paintings may be found in the permanent collections of museums worldwide. Vantore's style is characterized by bravura brushwork, a saturated palette, innovative perspective and a compositional structure that imparts vivacity to his carefully-observed subjects. Woman with a Guitar, Cubism
By Simka Simkhovitch
Located in Greenwich, CT
A period work by a Russian artist working in a Cubist approach. The canvas is 24 1/4 x 22 1/4 inches and the above dimension is the framed size. The frame is an older frame, with a flat gold/brown finish. In Woman with Guitar, Simkhovitch plays on his his early fascination with Cubism and Constructivism (and his background in illustration) expressing and compressing with planes and color the spatiality of a domestic scene. Considered a master draftsman and an adherent of certain classicism, Simkhovitch’s compositions are often built up in a complicated but well-managed counterpoint, at heart, he is a romanticist preferring the dreamy colors of a Russian fairy tale.
