In Marguerite the white peonies are a symbol of riches and honor used in Chinese art that profoundly influenced Pushman. Image size: 29"H x 49"W. Born in New York, Professor Lemos moved to San Francisco in 1887 where he established a studio at 106 Geary Street. He later moved to Santa Cruz in 1896, where he settled, painting murals for many local businessmen and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. As a boy Lemos earned money by wandering the streets and painting on request. Arriving in San Francisco in 1887, he established a studio at 106 Geary. With his wife Mabel, he worked in Los Angeles for a few years in the 1890s. After settling in Santa Cruz in 1896, he painted murals for many local businessmen. When the original Beach Casino was built there at the Boardwalk in 1904, Lemos was the first concessionaire and worked there for nearly 40 years. On his platform in the Casino, Lemos did paintings of redwoods, still lifes, forest fires, beach scenes, and marines. Many of his oils were done on redwood slabs which were popular with the tourists; in the early days these paintings sold for one dollar and up depending on the size of the work. After his vision failed and he was unable to paint, his last years were mostly spent fishing off the Municipal Pier with a friend who baited his hook for him because he could no longer see. In the March 27, 1941 Santa Cruz Sentinel News Lemos reminisced, "Them were the days when the Boardwalk was only twelve feet long and when business got slow I picked up my shotgun and went across the street and shot ducks where the Casa del Rey Hotel now stands." Her eldest son, William, was a naïve still life, landscape, and mural painter. As a young boy in New York, he would wander the streets, earning money for the family, by ‘painting on request.’ At age 26, William moved to San Francisco, California. He opened an art studio and kept it running until he moved to Santa Cruz with his wife, Mabel, in 1896. Kahn, March 6, 2014, The New York Times Onderdonk, a San Antonio native who died of an intestinal ailment in 1922, at 40, is best known for painting swaths of Texas bluebonnets. Those canvases can bring more than $500,000 each, while his New York scenes usually end up in the five-figure range. Onderdonk’s parents were painters in San Antonio, and in 1901, when he was a teenager, they sent him to New York for training. Through 1909, he lived in various Manhattan apartments and Staten Island houses. He then returned to Texas, but continued to spend months at a time in New York. In 1902 he had married a Manhattan teenage neighbor, Gertrude Shipman. While she focused on raising their daughter, Adrienne, and worrying about their strained finances, “he created more than 600 works of art, often producing a painting or two a day,” Eyewitnesses recorded his prolific pace in New York, but Onderdonk works bearing those dates rarely turn up. The puzzling gap in his productivity is explained in family correspondence that the Bakers uncovered: The artist admits that he was signing pieces with pseudonyms. He mostly used Chas. Andrew Thomas Schwartz (American, 1867-1942) The Fates, c. 1900 Oil on canvas 30 x 30 in. Framed: 39 1/4 x 39 in. Andrew T. Schwartz was born in Louisville, Kentucky. His early education was in the public schools of his hometown, where he showed great promise as an artist. In 1890, he began intense art study with the famed Frank Duveneck at the Cincinnati ArtAcademy. He later studied with H. Siddons Mowbray at the Art Students League in New York, where he was awarded the Lazarus Scholarship for mural painting to study abroad, which resulted in three years of study in Italy, France, Germany and England. He was, at the time, only the second person to win that award. His work from the Lazarus trip was the subject of an individual show at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He returned to the United States to assist his teacher Mowbray in decorating the University Club and J. P. Morgan's private library in New York. He later worked independently and developed a following as a mural painter. His reputation was certainly enhanced by the mural Christ, the Good Shepherd for the Baptist Church in South Londonderry, Vermont, which was considered at the time one of the best examples of mural painting. Other murals were painted for the Courthouse of New York, the New York YMCA, the Atkins Museum of Fine Art in Kansas City and the Kansas City Life Insurance Company Building. Schwartz also painted a number of other paintings in addition to his murals, including both figurative and landscapes. Many of his landscapes are views of New England. He exhibited extensively at the National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, and other major cities. He was a member of the National Society of Mural Painters, the Salmagundi Club, the Architectural League of New York, Allied Artists of America, American Watercolor Society, the Circolo Artistico of Rome, Italy, and the Union International Des Beaux Arts et Des Lettres of Paris, France. A memorial show of Schwartz's work was held at the Lotus Club of New York City in 1944 through the efforts of the sculptor, Charles Keck. The dean of art critics of the time, Royal Cortissoz, viewed Schwartz's work before the exhibition in Keck's studio and wrote, "Schwartz could saturate an Italian scene in the handsome 'Roman Twilight' but when he came to paint the countryside of his native land he was moved solely by its racy sentiment. Walter Schnackenberg’s style changed several times during his long and successful career. Having studied in Munich, the artist traveled often to Paris where he fell under the spell of the Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s colorful and sensuous posters depicting theatrical and decadent subjects. Schnackenberg became a regular contributor of similar compositions to the German magazines Jugend and Simplicissimus before devoting himself to the design of stage scenery and costumes. In the artist’s theatrical work, his mastery of form, ornamentation, and Orientalism became increasingly evident. He excelled at combining fluid Art Nouveau outlines, with spiky Expressionist passages, and the postures and patterns of the mysterious East. In his later years, Schnackenberg explored the unconscious, using surreal subject matter and paler colors that plainly portrayed dreams and visions, some imbued with political connotations.
