"Lovers" - Limited Edition Fine Art Print

This entire series was inspired by a piece of graffiti by the street artist Banksy in the UK. Nick Stern - who ironically has been called the Banksy of Los Angeles and goes by the street name "Plastic Jesus" -decided to set himself the challenge to recreate the original Banksy graffiti with as much accuracy as possible, including the texture of the walls where the stencils were on and the windows on the buildings here in Los Angeles. Most were recreated “in situation”, without any photo shop. Only two works “The Maid” and “The Lovers” required minimal photoshop. Nick is English as is Banksy but based in Los Angeles so finding brick walls or a sash window was fun to find for the shoots.
All photographs are printed to order and signed, with a certificate of authenticity signed by Wallspace. They are printed on 20”x16”paper with a border included - be aware that images may not all be exactly the same size as the imagery has different layouts. The paper size will be framed to the same size. The paper is a heavy weight fine art paper Entrada.

Guido Harari recalls, "I collaborated with Kate for over ten years, doing her official press photos for “Hounds of Love”, “The Sensual World”, “The Red Shoes” and on set photography for her film “The Line, The Cross & The Curve”. She wanted me to avoid the iconizing of previous shoots, and find a different way of capturing her more naturally. Shooting in the studio for hours allowed for much improvisation as there were to be no props or fancy sets. I used different techniques more to entertain ourselves rather than to experiment! “Horenstein’s creatures are decontextualized. They appear without the backdrop of the natural landscape, outside even the artificial world of the zoo or aquarium, and devoid of their true color. As a consequence, the images are truly arresting; and in both a literal and a metaphorical sense, we see these animals as we have never seen them before. We notice details, and Horenstein focuses our vision on the unexpected: the foot of an elephant, the eye of an octopus, the hair on the back of a gibbon’s head, the pattern of feathers on a bird’s neck. He plays with scale: the rear end and tail of a rhinoceros occupy the entire picture frame. We see these as if through a magnifying glass. His pictures challenge us to look more closely, to ask questions and make connections. We think about form and function: the relationship between an elephant’s foot, a horse’s hoof, and our own toes. We ponder modes of sensing and communication: the signals that hold together a school of fish. Examining these photographs, we become scientists and discoverers.
“In some respects, Horenstein’s work continues a centuries-old tradition of natural history illustration in the realm of photography. In natural history illustration, animals are often presented in shallow space with limited landscape, sometimes even against a blank page, in order to promote close examination and study of detail. But as much as these photographs promote scientific inquiry, they are more than scientific illustration. Animals were the subjects of our first art and our first metaphors; and freed from the constraints of space and time, many of Horenstein’s creatures remind us of the lost magical connection between the ‘animal world’ and our own. They are unsettling and they mesmerize. They transcend and transgress familiar boundaries between subject and object. Who is observing whom? The Komodo dragon looks at us with piercing eyes. We’re transfixed by the gaze of the harbor...

Tony recalls - I got a call from Jill Furmanovsky saying she’d double booked herself. She had been booked to photograph Bruce Springsteen at Wembley, and some unknown guy at a small venue in The Strand. “She said she would go to the Wembley and asked me to go to photo the other gig. Well it turned out to be Prince at his first ever gig in the UK. Back then nobody was too sure about Prince’s sexuality so I went along to The Strand and assumed he’d be playing at Heaven – a gay venue. I got there, but my name wasn’t on the door which wasn’t too unusual. I talked the security guard around to let me in saying I had to photo this performer who was about to go on stage inside. Over a 50-year span, McDarrah documented the rise of the Beat Generation, the city’s postmodern art movement, its off-off-Broadway actors, troubadours, politicians, agitators and social protests.
Fred captured Jack Kerouac frolicking with women at a New Year’s bash in 1958, Andy Warhol adjusting a movie-camera lens in his silver-covered factory, and Bob Dylan offering a salute of recognition outside Sheridan Square near the Voice’s old office.
Not just a social chronicler, McDarrah was a great photo-journalist.
For years, McDarrah was the Voice's only photographer and, for decades, he ran the Voice’s photo department, where he helped train dozens of young photographers, including James Hamilton, Sylvia Plachy, Robin Holland and Marc Asnin. His mailbox was simply marked "McPhoto."
An exhibit of McDarrah’s photos of artists presented by the Steven Kasher Gallery in Chelsea was hailed by The New York Times as “a visual encyclopedia of the era’s cultural scene.”
