It was announced last week that British singer, actress and it girl Marianne Faithfull had died in London on January 30 at 78. Faithfull rose to fame at the age of 18 with her 1964 hit “As Tears Go By,” later becoming a total tabloid fixation when she began dating Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger.
From her youthful stardom to her reinvention as a cabaret singer after recovering from drug addiction, she had a unique sense of style that spanned her work in music and film, as well as her personal life.
Faithfull’s likeness was captured by some of the most celebrated photographers of the 20th century. Gered Mankowitz shot her at the Salisbury pub in London in 1964, the year she was discovered by Andrew Loog Oldham, the manager of the Rolling Stones. Slim Aarons photographed Jagger and Faithfull in 1968 at Leixlip Castle, the home at the time of Desmond Guiness. Andy Warhol snapped her picture backstage at a Blondie concert in 1982.
“She seemed to touch all the moments, from Mod to rich hippie to bad girl and punk, corsets to leather to the nun outfit she wore when she performed with Bowie,” fashion designer Anna Sui told the New York Times following Faithfull’s death.
Here, we look back at a few stunning images of the music and fashion icon.
