archival pigment print 24 x 24 inches unframed This contemporary, surrealist style photograph was printed by the artistic duo, Kahn & Selesnick, in 2010. The print is part of their 'Mar: Adrift on the Hourglass Sea' series which features deserted landscapes in outer space. In this image, a mysterious and otherworldly mechanism floats through the Martian landscape. It is unknown who or what is operating it. With this imagery, the artists entice an imaginative narrative where the viewer is left to conjure up their own story. About the series: "Mars: Adrift on the Hourglass Sea" is Kahn and Selesnick’s first project to feature a female protagonist; a woman finds herself alone in a wasteland that appears to be Mars. It is uncertain how she arrived in this place, via spacecraft, through a fold in the space-time continuum or perhaps the landscape is a mental projection. Either way, it is clear that she has escaped an unnamed catastrophe on Earth. In a series of hallucinatory episodes she simultaneously explores the planet and builds a mock-life for herself from a combination of high-tech and stone-age materials. Mars is revealed to have ruined artifacts and monuments from a previous, or perhaps future, civilization. The remains of massive stone listening devices are littered about the landscape, leading us to wonder: is this a colony that has collapsed and lost touch with earth? How did its occupants become stranded? Or are these the nocturnal imaginings of a post-apocalyptic survivor? Summer fun, bathing suits, swimming pools etc. Jay Wolke lives and works in Chicago, Illinois. He has had solo exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago, the St. Louis Art Museum, Harvard University and the California Museum of Photography. His photographs are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Three monographs of his work have been published: All Around the House: Photographs of American-Jewish Communal Life (Art Institute of Chicago, 1998), Along the Divide: Photographs of the Dan Ryan Expressway (Center for American Places, 2004) and Architecture of Resignation: Photographs from the Mezzogiorno (Center for American Places, 2011). Kehrer Verlag will publish his fourth monograph, Same Dream Another Time, in 2017. Wolke received his B.F.A. in Printmaking / Illustration at Washington University, St. Louis, and an M.S. in Photography at the Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. Since 1981 he has taught photography and art at various universities. From 1992-1999 he was Coordinator of Graduate Documentary Photography at the Institute of Design (IIT). In 1999-2000 he was Head of Art and Graduate Studies at Studio Art Centers International, Florence, Italy. He is currently a Professor of Photography at Columbia College Chicago, where he also served as Chair of the Art and Design Department from 2000-05 and again from 2008-14. Wolke has received grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Illinois Arts Council, Focus Infinity Fund and the Ruttenberg Arts Foundation. His photographs have appeared in numerous publications including Geo France, New York Times Magazine, Financial Times Magazine, Village Voice, Exposure and Architectural Record. It is in very excellent condition. About Michael Andreas Russ. Michael Andreas Russ (born January 1945 in Berlin) is an German/American photographer, photo designer and film director. Russ' career as a photographer began in New York in the late 1960s where he photographed his fellow acting students. Self-taught, he eventually moved to his own studio off Union Square, Manhattan and connected with the local underground art scene. Photograph by Russ was published on the cover of “Art Direction Magazine of Visual Communication” with a Gertrude Stein quotation: “The composition in which we live makes the art which we see and hear” In his early years Russ focused on men's fashion magazines and erotic sequential photographic scenes for Playboy Press books. He eventually experimented with distinctive photographic techniques, turning 35mm black and white film into chemically toned, masked, solarized and hand colored, one of a kind silver gelatin prints. These 'TinTones' as Russ would call them eventually became the trademark of his work. They were published in popular fashion and lifestyle magazines and brought him international recognition in the art world. His work was published in major fashion, lifestyle and avant-garde magazines, GUNNARS, Mode International, Mode Avant Guarde, PHOTO Magazine, Zoom (photography magazine), as well as German Playboy (magazine), Photo Reporter and cover art to IL Magazine.
