About the Item

Coco Chanel, 1937 - Cecil Beaton (Black and White Photography) Stamped with photographer's ink stamp on reverse Silver gelatin print, printed c. 1965 9 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches Cecil Beaton established his reputation during the 1920s by photographing British society in his distinctive, stylized manner, combining elements of Surrealism with a modernized interpretation of the British portrait tradition. By the 1930s, Beaton's career had expanded internationally, and his relocation to Hollywood solidified his status as the preferred photographer for emerging film stars and other cultural figures. By the end of the decade, Beaton had also become the photographer of choice for the British Royal Family. This portrait of Coco Chanel, taken for Vogue magazine, embodies this high point in Beaton's pre-war career. Beaton's relationship with Chanel spanned several decades; he photographed her again in 1965, and in 1969 he designed the set and costumes for the Broadway play "Coco," starring Katharine Hepburn, which earned him a prestigious Tony Award. The present work is a vintage contact print, sold during the 1970s by Sotheby's, which had recently acquired Beaton's archive. This print remained in the same collection until it was purchased by Huxley-Parlour Gallery in 2024.
