Gered Mankowitz
Rolling Stones Masons Yard Lightbox, 1965

1965

About the Item

British rock band The Rolling Stones (Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman and Brian Jones) photographed at Mason’s Yard studio in London, 1965. At the age of 15, Gered Mankowitz left school and embarked upon what would become a highly successful photography career, meeting and shooting some of the most iconic actors, personalities, and musicians of the 20th century. The brilliant and beloved late actor and comedian Peter Sellers encouraged Mankowitz to pursue photography. After cutting his teeth as an apprentice in the studios of some of London’s top photographers and taking on early commissions for fashion companies, Mankowitz set up his own studio and soon found himself where he belonged: the music industry. His sitters have included Marianne Faithfull, Jimi Hendrix, Duran Duran, Elton John, and the Rolling Stones, who he met and toured with at the beginning of their rise to super-stardom. In addition to teaching, mounting exhibitions, and working for magazines and other clients, Mankowitz continues to document musicians. Other sizes available: 16"x20", 20"x24", 30"x40"

There has been so much press crowding the set that it has been impossible for Louis to get any work done. So we have decided to close the set, and we want you to be our only photographer there.” I virtually skipped out of the office in anticipation of being with Bardot and Moreau, two of the biggest French stars...

  • Faye Dunaway Oscar, 1977 Beverly Hills Hotel
    By Terry O'Neill
    Located in Beverly Hills, CA
Custom Framed Hardwood Moulding Acid Free Mount with UV Plexiglass 60"x60" Unframed Artist Proof American actress Faye Dunaway takes breakfast by the pool with the day’s newspapers at the Beverly Hills Hotel, 29th March 1977. She seems less than elated with her success at the previous night’s Academy Awards ceremony, where she won the 1976 Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for ‘Network’. As Terry O’Neill remembered: “We met a few weeks before and struck up a friendship. She was the odds-on favourite to win an Oscar for her astonishing performance in ‘Network’. I was asked to take a photo of the winner, so I convinced Faye to meet me at the pool first thing next morning. I didn’t want to take the expected photo; the one with the actor holding the award, moments after, with a stunned expression. I wanted to capture something different. “I somehow convinced Faye to agree.” As the legend goes, Terry convinced Faye to meet him by the pool at The Beverly Hills Hotel as early as possible the morning after the Academy Awards. True to her word, she appeared on time at the break of dawn having had barely a minute’s sleep. Terry charmed the staff to let them use the pool for an hour and while he scattered the morning’s papers at her feet, all trumpeting her success. Faye arrived, sat in the chair and placed her golden statue...
