For many years, Brenda Zlamany has painted portraits of other artists, including Chuck Close, Alex Katz, and David Hockney. She has also been a subject for them; as she puts it, “we are professional posers.” Recently, however, she has worked to paint portraits of those whose gaze is more internal—monks and nomads in Tibet, aboriginal people in Taiwan—creating large bodies of portraits that investigate the limits of the genre. She returned, with her daughter, to Hockney’s studio in 2014, not only to sit for him but to paint him once again. Her practice involves the long sittings and intense looking required of traditional portrait-making.

The Good Dishes integrates memory, legacy, and metaphor with my response to loss. As I witnessed an early generation of family members pass, my cousins and I were each faced with the emotional task of cleaning out the family home. Sorting through the heirlooms, we would determine which items to toss, sell, or preserve. Without fail, when it came to the family’s fine china, that item was always given to the person who most cherished its memory and sentimental value.
Growing up in a large Italian family, everything was centered around food and the family table. I remember vividly my mother’s vintage marigold stoneware dishes that she bought at the grocery store back in the early 1970s. The Good Dishes integrates memory, legacy, and metaphor with my response to loss. As I witnessed an early generation of family members pass, my cousins and I were each faced with the emotional task of cleaning out the family home. Sorting through the heirlooms, we would determine which items to toss, sell, or preserve. Without fail, when it came to the family’s fine china, that item was always given to the person who most cherished its memory and sentimental value.
Growing up in a large Italian family, everything was centered around food and the family table. I remember vividly my mother’s vintage marigold stoneware dishes that she bought at the grocery store back in the early 1970s. When it comes to accenting a home or collection with visual art, still-life photography complements all design aesthetics. And there are numerous ways to arrange your still-life photography and other wall art in your home. A salon-style gallery wall, for example, presents the opportunity to intersperse photographs and prints with such items as wall sculptures, baskets, plates, mirrors and sconces. When photography was a new medium in the 19th century, daguerreotype and salt-print still lifes frequently mimicked the arrangements that had been popular in painting. In the 20th century, still-life photographs evolved, reshaped by the experimentation of modernism.
Far more versatile than the name implies, still-life photography involves numerous styles and themes. Photographers like Stefanie Schneider use still lifes to capture their subjects in their most raw state.
