About the Item

ASGER JORN (Jutland 1914-1973 Aarhus) From head to toe. 1966/67. lithograph numbered 10/75, signed lower right: Jorn. Paper size 90 x 63 cm Published and printed by Erker-Presse, St. Gallen. Good conditions. "From Head to Toe" belongs to the late graphic series that represent the high point of his graphic work. He impressively demonstrates his talent in dealing with colour and impressively gives free rein to his spontaneity. This work is very rarely found on the art market. For Asger Jorn, art is something necessary that permeates the whole of life. It is about "rebellion, doubt and contradiction (...) Jorn wanted to disturb agreements, irritate habits, spread unrest" (ibid., p. 44). Again and again he challenges us, and so the attentive viewer always discovers figurative elements in the abstract paintings. Art offers Jorn extensive possibilities to realise his ideas. Throughout his life, he explored the technical possibilities of printmaking, so that it accompanied and documented every step of his artistic development; it offered him the possibility of unlimited experimentation. Untitled (Tamarind O )
By Leon Polk Smith
Located in New York, NY
Leon Polk Smith (1906 -1996) holds a unique place in a long tradition of American geometric abstract painting. Born near Chikasha, a Native American territory later annexed by the U.S. as the state of Oklahoma, Smith’s parents, who were of Cherokee ancestry, raised him with both a strong sense of his heritage and an abiding respect for the land. Art would eventually draw Smith to New York where he would quickly embrace elements of geometric abstraction in his work. Many of Smith’s hard-edge compositions could be viewed as distillations of imagery drawn from the Oklahoma landscape...
